[Ned Miller] “Should i bring it into he store and have them do it or is it a DIY project?
“Unless you are very hamfisted I’d say you could add more memory and a new Graphic card yourself ( that’s if you need one )
On the minimum system requirements section on the Apple FCPX Technical Specifications page they recommend an openCL-capable graphics card or Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later.
And they only recommend 6GB of RAM!
I’ve got a similar Mac Pro and have now installed 22GB of RAM but I’m not that sure how much it helps me.
There are loads of instructional documents and tutorials available on the net and it’s good to get to know your mac.
However if you are only planning to use it for a couple of months your will be sinking cash into a soon to be redundant system.
What I would do is install FCPX on your Mac Pro as it is at the moment and see how you get on.

[John Davidson] “Just though you’d be interested to know that we just found out Apple is currently not offering business discounts for the new imac. According to my local store Apple corporate is refusing to allow the discount (usually about 5%) and nobody can figure out why. On a souped up iMac the quote is about 3k with apple care and base RAM, so the amount comes out to about $150.”
It’s the same story as the Retina Macbook Pro, I enquired at the time of that being launched and was told that because demand was so high they had been told not to give this discount.
Customer loyalty eh!
If I hadn’t been making a living using Macs for the last 30 years I might look elsewhere.
Maybe they have stopped this discount across the board especially as we are now all Pros.

[Bernard Newnham] “Upgrade to CS6, because you know the system and it works perfectly well. Buy a pc version and a pc. Put the two together and there’ll be be no more overpriced pretty gear, no more waiting, surmising, suggesting, hoping, wanting, angst-ing…….”
Wheres the fun in that?

[Cameron Hall] “Is it worth the extra money to buy Final cut X or upgrade my existing Premiere Pro with motion on my Mac operating system?”
Craig’s right it’s not a lot of money.
And FCPX is available on a free 30 day trial basis.
What might be more crucial is the amount of time you are going to have to spend getting used to the new working protocol of FCPX. So if you are happy with the way you are working with Premier Pro you would find it easier to take that upgrade route.
However if you fancy a fresh editing experience FCPX 10.0.6 is a very different NLE system from the one that was released last June, our company has been making a living with it for a year and half, and it’s slowly gaining traction in the broadcast market for certain kinds of jobs.

Thank’s Chris,
Would really like to see this exhibition but can’t make it from the UK. From a look at the LACMA site I can see that there are costumes and props from quite a few films. His very early films are available on YouTube
Kubrick started off as a self shooting director and I’m sure that he would have been fascinated by the DSLR / Larger Sensor filming movement and who knows he might even have liked FCPX!

[David Lawrence] “The FCPX debate is still active, passionate and robust. The name of this forum is fine.”
Can’t say it better than that.
I’ve been with FCPX since the launch but am always interested in how others are getting on.

However there are several copies of Apple Final Cut Studio 2 on Ebay with buy it now prices from £50. This obviously contains DVD Studio Pro which I am still using and running on Mountain Lion.
Be worth checking that all the registration information is present and correct.

[Oliver Peters] “Pure and simple, the software is designed for fast turnaround, news and simple (in editing style) broadcast work and starts to fall down when you get really complex with it.”
Well you are right about FCPX failing the more complex the edit is.
I have to really question why I still use it for professional work because, like you, I spend a lot of time waiting for it to catch up with itself and I’m sorry to say that 10.0.6 has not improved the core functionality, by that I mean reliability, of the software.
I know that every user encounters their own set of problems, or I hope for some lack of problems, dependent on the Mac set up they are using. But for me, the spinning ball, force quit, trash preferences and relaunch is very much part of my work pattern.
It always starts off well and the Event Library side of things is pretty smart. But I have learnt to create my work in short sections and then bring it together towards the end because as soon as one gets a couple of minutes into an edit everything gets very awkward and slow. ( and I’ve got 22Gbs ram)
I think that 10.0.6 is 2 steps forward and one step back. To have to relearn core editing activities after almost a year and a half is really annoying.
I really don’t see the advantage of the new import and export windows, If it ain’t broke why fix it, and where has the share monitor gone? The only way to see if an export has finished is to watch my CPU activity monitor.
And for me whilst having an Event Viewer can be useful for certain jobs I keep on trying to use the skimmer within it?
For me the most useful addition is the copy clip attributes feature.
What I’m waiting for is the new MacPro. I’ve got the idea that that will resolve all my day to day problems with FCPX although through reading some of the posts on this forum even those with the latest MBPro machines have issues.
But when the software is working well well I think it’s superb although I would agree with you that It’s probably been designed for quick turnaround news type jobs.

[Abraham Chaffin] “The forum has been converted to a hybrid forum that pulls from other forums based on certain keywords. The keywords are shown as checkboxes at the top of the forum.”
So is this a new feature?
It totally dissipates the focus of this excellent forum.
So there are these tick boxes below the title header of this forum, these seem to be unique to this forum as they are not to be found on theFCPX Techniques page, what is the purpose of them?
‘Apple FCPX or Not: The Debate’ and ‘Apple FCPX Techniques’ work really well together, the one a platform for innovation, NLE musings and debate and the other a practical problem solving forum.
Lets hope this a glitch.

[Keith Koby] “It would be nice to have source time code overlays in the viewer like we had with 7. Maybe someone can do that with a plugin. I recall that you can do this on the timeline now with the playhead, but I don’t remember exactly how at the moment.”
Great reply Keith and fingers crossed these basic, unglamorous, TC failings will be addressed in the next or subsequent update. It’s these sort of things that really stop FCPX being taken up by many professional editors.
As to how you get a temporary glimpse of the source timecode:
Richard Taylor gives a really clear explanation.
