John,
The BSODs are quite varied – although ‘page fault in non-paged area’ is probably most frequent. I have run the diagnostic MEMory tests – and now, given I am not having to attempt overnight renders, will run the deep/long versions. Yes a page fault is technically a Windows issue, but given they only occur while rendering (very large) video files, in Vegas, is a tad suspicious!

I regularly use CCleaner, and have a 1TB raid locally (on stitch host) and a 4TB NAS. It’s an older 9800GX2 graphics card (and yes, I am contemplating upgrading) with 8Gb nonEEC DDR2 8000Mhz RAM appropriate to the system.
I can only assume maybe there is a corruption in the source video files – but given it now renders (admittedly in halves) – perhaps not?

Are you using win 7 x64? Do you have enough memory? Have you checked what processes are running under ‘normal’ conditions? Anything that looks ‘odd’ try ‘stopping’ and seeing if the system keels over or not. Maybe you have a virus/background process that is hogging cpu time.
If nothing seems out of the ordinary, I think it sounds like a rebuild might now be necessary. If you do not have Win 7 64x get it and give yourself 8Gb+.
If you *only* install Windows updates and then the latest version of Vegas (you *really* using 10???) then see if the problem continues.

Network rendering is indeed a very useful addition to the process. However with 3 pcs available to me I find that one (via WiFi) is never ‘called into action’.
Also (similar to my BSOD problem) network rendering would crash and never clear up after itself and therefore a restart of all machines is required.
In addition, if one machine stops, why should the whole process stop? Surely the dispatcher should reschedule that element to another machine?
One other issue: MPEGx will not be rendered across non-licensed machines (i.e. those render-only installs) this is a real nuisance! I can’t afford 3x licences
Does the new v10 have improvements in this area???

Having also experienced a lot of BSODs when rendering, on a Win 7 64x box with Vegas 9.0e 64x and with 8Gb the problem appeared to lie (bizarrely) with my markers – I had well over 100x. Rendering small projects was ok, but recent projects have been 1h45+ and with 3 cameras (AVCHD & HD) into both mpeg2 and mpeg4. Try splitting the project up and ensuring that only the stuff you really really needs is in it (save as is your friend here too)…

John, thanks for your help – and apologies for delay in response (there is a day job too… 8-( )
I continued to experience BSODs and ‘normal’ crashes in Vegas, so I did split the project into sections (which also was less than successful). However, when doing so I noticed a marker problem (having saved as, then cutting the 2nd half) all the markers from the second half were shifted into a block at the end of the first half. But ignored it.
The half did not render. However, when I removed all the unnecessary markers (I had well over 100 of them in the entire project), lo and behold, the thing rendered (into a mpeg2) format.
Following this ‘mad idea’ I repeated the process on the second half that *that* has now rendered. I wonder if there is a problem with rendering markers (numbered?) > 100??? Not really bothered now – but am very happy to have resolved a potential issue.
My question though now is, you mentioned Cineform. Having done a quick search it’s not something I know anything about and there is no template in Vegas (unless it’s got a completely different name?). Can you enlighten me???
Thanks again for your patience and help!

@John: Technically you are right – applications don’t generate BSODs but they DO indirectly. It is quite possible that there may be memory, data, processing issue, but given my XPS is rocksolid on Win7x64Ultimate *except* when rendering video in Vegas… I use Sibelius *a lot* (and I mean, a lot) the graphics demand is probably equally as high, and no problems. So I suspect, whilst the BSOD is possibly a consequence, it is most definitely related to Vegas.
Another forum poster has also suggested that the combination of AVCHD and Full HD in the same project is a bad mix. Odd, but I will try the conversion to something else (mxf was suggested). I have only used my AVCHD in projects in the past which were never very long (short diving videos) so the problem never really appeared.
Thanks for your thoughts tho.

Hi
I have 9.0e and a quad core processor Dell XPS, Win 7 64x and 8G RAM & 1TB RAID. I have a 1h45 min three camera recording of a concert I gave and having built the thing, want to render to DVD, BluRay and also (for a laugh) an iPod version.
However I cannot get Vegas to render it as it continually crashes (bombs out) either when rendering alone or via my network (3pcs). Even when I render in parts it can’t manage it. I also regularly get BSODs which is even more irritating.
Two of the cameras are full HD, one AVCHD (which is still in orig format).
It has been suggested converting the AVCHD to MPEG2 might be a good thing. Will this reduce the crashing???
Anything else I can do????
