January 20, 2008 at 1:54 pm in reply to: Final Cut creating HUGE files during capture

My problem was created by upgrading to QT 7.3 and using it with FCP 4.5. When using Captured Now, it created huge .av files. My problem was solved by reverting back to QT 7.2, which was a major pain (ended up having to re-install OS). I got my answer in another post.

I am using an old G4 Powerbook and don’t think it can handle later versions of FCP. The preferred solution would be to upgrade everything to the latest versions, but for me it was cost prohibitive, so I went BACK to the tried and true method.

    Hope this helps,
    Mark

Yes, I did. I successfully captured long clips for another project three weeks ago on this same drive.

Since I posted my question, I took the time to scroll through this message board (instead of searching) and someone said there might be an issue with QT 7.3. Is this not compatible with FCP 4.5?

    Thanks,
    Mark

those threads have been taken off the bulletin board. Can you tell us what it said? I’m having the same problem. A two minute or so mini-dv clip taking up 365GB at capture. Arrrgggh!

Did this fix your problem? It seems a lot of people are having this problem of a HUGE file being created on capture. BTW Shne, love your DVD about capturing. Does it come with one free phone call?

That’s no beach ball. It’s the Wheel of Death.

I just tried trashing the prefs – quit FCP first! – and deleting the QT files as suggested. It didn’t seem to work, so I tried unplugging everything and starting over. I opened a new project and I was able to see the video and capture it. I then went to my original project and now it works. Not sure which thing fixed the problem, but it’s working now.

I think troubleshooting by seeing if the problem persists in a new project is a good place to start.

Thanks for thinking about my problem, Richard.

Briefly, I thought 60i and 29.95 fps were interchangeable terms and only mentioned it because in other posts it seemed helpful to the problem solvers to distinguish it from 24 fps, which can come with a natural flicker, or jitter, if you pan too quickly.

I will triple check my sequence setting on your recommendation, but the problem seems to have been helped by making more room on my INTERNAL hard drive (where the FCP program is). I thought 8 G of space was adequate, but it seems to run smoother with the now 25 G of space.

Just want to pass this along to future searchers of this forum.

Thanks for responding, but you are incorrect when you state the DVX does not shoot 60i, or standard mode. And I said nothing about having to render video, which is not the case.

Anyone else have an idea about what’s causing jerky video? I’m thinking it’s either my use of an external hard drive or a captured incorrectly.
    Thanks,
