You could go with 3 to 5 drives on mac pro and get reasonable speed. Still it would be relatively cheap. One drive is a bit bad even with uncompressed SD in some cases.

Hi. It seems to me if it is not from settings etc the it might be the actual unit you use. Can you ask another unit form your reseller for testing ?

As Bob have sayed in here g raid is no no. I think 10 k is not really good option as you sayed too expensive and to small. Speed you gain is not so much. I might help with servers more than in video work. More like expensive hobby i’d say as 1 tb and 1,5 tb drives are really well priced these days. I might be dead wrong also.

This camera probably has FW ?
I have done like that i capture SDI like always but for camera control and timecode use firewire instead. Generally it work well. I have had some issues with avid offlines but that might be that Avid express and FCP have different underestanding on timebase and i suspect that Cheapo avid makes all go bad. Same material captured one on fcp and fw control other on Avid Express and fw only.

You might consider other solutions as MAXX Digital etc as XServe is not the cheapest and fastest.

I’d say it is very likely that different sources have variable size black borders as i have seen on different tapes. Some systems also do not give out full pixel area for tape.
Just use photoshop to scale up a bit in the same image area.

I guess just use HDMI to SDI miniconverter for that. DVI to hdmi module would help there which is probably available on Radioshack etc. Other question is how does outcoming signal look due to resolution which is not standard SD or HD.
