[Paul Provost] “then download the brand new manual Feb 2014 from support page and read it cover to cover… twice”
    Very wise advice.

  • I think we should officially call the new cache feature in Resolve 11 “The Blackstone Cache.”

[Eric Chase] “But will it also “safe” chroma?”
Yes, there are three different levels of “safe,” each stepping the luminance/chroma down from optimum to “very conservative” levels that appear to stop just about any overshoots.

I always did this manually, but this is a nice feature to have and I’m glad they implemented it.

And note there is also a new manual (the first since November).

I think this is a VFX issue, and you do need for that to be rendered before you get it. If the blend between shots is seamless, then just color-correct it as if it were a single shot. The problem is going to be in registering the image, taking care of shadow issues, focus issues, and stuff like that. I think it’s dangerous to do stuff like this, and I don’t think it’s as “organic” as just getting one take right with all actors involved, but I recognize that this is a trend nobody can avoid nowadays.

Imagine a scene with five or six people in the frame, and each person is from a different take! It’s gonna happen (if it hasn’t already). Next, they’ll want that in 3D, with a Steadicam shot, rack-focusing to each actor all over the room…

This is why seamless cycs and large studios exist. It’s very hard to create that effect when you’re 7 feet away from the background and there’s all kinds of lines and crud on the wall. A tracking power window could help, but it’s never going to look great; it’ll be more of a repair job, a bandaid on something that needs stitches and a tourniquet.

You’re not going to get it to play back in full-res, but it should play back at 1/2-res or 1/4-res. Jason Myres of the LiftGammaGain site did some extensive tests on Resolve and the nMP’s, with the results here:

  • [Reuben Fink] “Say I append a Desat to 5 clips then I decide later that I need to change the saturation level on all 5 clips is there a way to do that change together?”
I think you have to change your working philosophy and come up with another, simpler way to accomplish the same thing. In the real world, I’ve never needed to do this. If I did, I’d do it in track mode and manually drop in one node and mark the in and out keyframes. There’s a lot of reasons I don’t like ripple mode in general, but the lack of undo and the complexity with different scenes that have vastly different node setups is the biggest one.

If you want to append a new node to the end of every scene, and then change that node, the procedure is detailed on page 650 and 651. I’ve only done ripples with the full panels, and am honestly not sure how to do it without them. But the workaround I described would do something similar (and is undoable).

  • [James Malamatinas] “I had renamed the clips for simplicity during the edit, however if doing so causes problems with conforming in future I would not bother (I thought on import it would use the actual clip file-name, not the Premiere name).”
Don’t ever rename the clips. You can change or add to the metadata all you want, but don’t screw around with the clip file names. Very bad idea. Simplicity to you is not simple to databases that need accurate pointers and file paths.

If it’s showing you black, then my guess is that it didn’t play back the still correctly or just momentarily hiccoughed. I’ve seen this on occasion. Double-click a still in the Gallery again and hit “Toggle Wipe” when you right click in the Viewer and see if that does it. Command-W to turn Wipe on or off.
