You may be right- I know Barefeats did some FCPX tests on different processors a while back. I’ll have to see what they results were.
Considering I’m currently working on a 2011 i7 iMac, anything is going to be a huge step up.

I agree wholeheartedly.
No question I’ll be chipping for the D700s- my only question is which is the best processor for FCPX/Motion workflow. For the extra money I’d spend on the 12-core 2.7GHz processor, is there any discernible benefit over the higher-clocked 8-core 3.0GHz.
Are there any barefeats tests on how multi-core aware the X and Motion are?

Great to see this. The lazy meme is that you can put a machine together this fast for half of what the MacPro is costing.
And as the article points out- there’s some compromises he’s had to make to get to that price. You just can’t get some of this stuff PC side yet.

To be fair, I think the toolbar appears thinner because on the higher-resolution display. The interface isn’t just being scaled up- it’s being reconfigured to give you more space. I was initially skeptical that this was anything new, since I’d imagine that the rounded corners on the video clips would probably also be reduced rescaled for the 4K display. But there is at least one key difference– There’s no timeline Index button in the lower right.
It’s interesting that in both potential screenshots we’ve seen, the Event Browser, info, and effects tabs have all been hidden.

You can hide the Event Browser window in a single monitor solution if you don’t need it. Here, they obviously want more screen real-estate for the multi-cam window. If you’re just cutting multi-cam, you don’t need it open.

Yup. It’s looks like working in multi-cam with the event browser hidden.
I don’t think there’s anything here that gives away any new UI or functionality.

Phil Schiller, “You can have up to 2 displays plus a 3rd HDMI display for broadcast monitoring”.
I just hope as Alex4D suggests that Apple will be able to firmware update to HDMI 2.0 for the extra bandwidth and colour space.

October 23, 2013 at 2:28 pm in reply to: So where are the 4K monitors to go with the multiple 4K outputs on a MacPro?Hey Oliver. Unless I heard it wrong, I believe the clarification on the 3 x 4K displays is 2 of them can be hooked up via Thunderbolt, and the 3rd one is via the HDMI 1.4.
Phil Schiller mentioned specifically on stage that the HDMI port could be used for broadcast monitoring.
I think this will eliminate a lot of people’s need for an external I/O box for video out. Unless you want to monitor Resolve- then you’ll still need to use theirs!

Yeah. I saw that one. I’d wager that’s the current interface, unless nothing has changed. I think the small size of the image is making the boxes seem more square.

Important footnote for “baseline” performance for those figures
Testing conducted by Apple in October 2013 using preproduction Mac Pro 12-core 2.7GHz units with 1TB flash storage and AMD FirePro D700 graphics, and shipping Mac Pro 12-core 3.06GHz units with 512GB SSD and ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics. All systems configured with 64GB of RAM. Tested with prerelease OS X 10.9 and prerelease Final Cut Pro X. Color correction, render, and optical flow retiming tests conducted using a 3840x2160p29.97 ProRes 4444 project. Streaming tests conducted using a 10-minute project with 16 unique 3840x2160p23.98 ProRes 422 clips. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac Pro.
