I’ll step up to the plate and serve myself a well cooked crow. I was one who figured the MacPro was completely dead. I know it was announced much earlier this year and I have to admit I was quite impressed with their quick video on how it is manufactured and assembled. That alone was impressive. I still may not get one just yet … but I’m curious. They went to great lengths to say you can have up to 3 4K screens attached to it yet there is no visible 4K monitor offering from Apple and not even a hint of rumors at this time.

I will grant you, it’s not really an issue for me as everything I do is still mostly 720p with an occasional 1080p but it struck me as odd.

The 4K monitors are for UI, not video output. Demos so far seem to be using a Sharp 4K monitor. Just think of it as the replacement for a 30″ or 27″ Apple Cinema Display.

    Example here:

I can’t believe someone that needs that good a monitor and mac isn’t using a real keyboard.

Undoubtedly there will be some users who will us a 4K interface monitor for full screen video also. The price tag for professional 4K video monitors is astronomical ($17K) and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Rest assured Apple will be coming out with a 4K monitor. How affordable it will be remains to be seen. Given prices of other 4K monitors, I’m guessing around $3000.

The unit does not come with a mouse or keyboard. Look at the “in the box” specs on the Apple website. He’s using an Apple Bluetooth keyboard from the looks of the picture.

Yes that’s exactly my point. I can’t believe he wouldn’t use a real keyboard.

[Brett Sherman] “Given prices of other 4K monitors, I’m guessing around $3000”

Yes, that’s correct, the Sharp monitor the guy is using is a Sharp PN-K321 which retails at just a whisper below $4K !

Inextricably we are being gently led into the next period of elite big spending and should Apple launch a domestic TV next year I would imagine that have 4K capability.

Even with nothing to play the files back onto I’m tempted by the new Sony PXW-Z100 Camcorder although having just listened to an interview with Philip Hodgetts
on Rick Youngs Blog that might be a premature investment.

But that aside I do think that the Mac Pro looks very odd, a bit like a modernist flower vase.

Hey Oliver. Unless I heard it wrong, I believe the clarification on the 3 x 4K displays is 2 of them can be hooked up via Thunderbolt, and the 3rd one is via the HDMI 1.4.

Phil Schiller mentioned specifically on stage that the HDMI port could be used for broadcast monitoring.

I think this will eliminate a lot of people’s need for an external I/O box for video out. Unless you want to monitor Resolve- then you’ll still need to use theirs!

That’s correct. We don’t know yet whether the HDMI is actual video output monitoring or just another UI output. I suspect as you do, that it will eliminate third party hardware, but that’s not a given.

I just double check the video. Not proof positive, but for the record what he says is.

Phil Schiller, “You can have up to 2 displays plus a 3rd HDMI display for broadcast monitoring”.

I just hope as Alex4D suggests that Apple will be able to firmware update to HDMI 2.0 for the extra bandwidth and colour space.

HDMI 1.4 supports deep color. HDMI 2.0 would be necessary for 4K @ 60 Hz, though.

Any word if Mavericks supports deep color yet? I know that some folks here were hoping it would, but I haven’t seen anything on it.
