Thank you very much for the excellent feedback. And yes, you’re absolutely correct in the pain and trouble involved. However, it is a good client and they are stuck, so I’ll step up and help them.
I am expecting to get a transcribed script and the language we are subtitling is English – so lets wait and see.
[Ron Lindeboom]“People will wish that this is a recession, as it just keeps going on and on. Unfortunately it isn’t one. As I have said in this forum before and feel compelled to do again, what we are seeing is a complete and utter reshuffling of opportunities and reallocation of money and resources around the world. It is a pendulum effect of redistributing wealth and power, as powers and economies pull and affect the future. It is going to stay like this for the foreseeable future.”
Amen, I am with you 100%.
The UK for one spent 60 years paying its debts off for fighting World War II, now it will have to spend another 120 years dealing with this thing the experts didn’t want to call a recession until it was too late. And now it is no longer a recession, because in our part of the world we have sold/exported all of the Crown Jewels to pay for the last gig – manufacturing, Farming and services.
And then there is the clever ones that tells us that we can innovate ourselves out of this situation with our advanced educational systems and laboratories – hellooo!!! Even if we could, it has been proven that other cultures have no problems in copying our trademarks, patents, software and films. It will just be a question of time before the Indian educational system teams up with Chinese manufacturing, then the rest of us will have a problem…
All sounds like Doom & Gloom – but really, as much as I feel that I have a poorer not as happy life-style as that of my parents generation when they were in their late twenties/early thirties, I also believe that I with all my tools of communication around me has a chance and and opportunity to do my part about solving all of those problems. The solution is really easy:
Bring back manufacturing and start supporting farming again.
Do not allow a large proportion of a country’s healthy workers to be on social services when there are jobs they can do, currently been done by people on immigrant visas.
Stop trading with/importing/buying products from nations that doesn’t respect your I/P.
And then, innovate, innovate, innovate – maybe a trip to Mars is needed? Certainly green tech and a hopeful lessor reliance on raw materials will catapult us forward.
I tend to use our yousendit.com account as a free valued extra to the service. Unless it is very large files or we get 50+ downloads – had that happen before Christmas, and our account rightfully so, stopped working…
However, I am aware that we for some of our overseas broadcasters are saving them at least $500 in satellite fees by using ftp instead of the old fashioned way. The only problem we tend to hit is when a client why our uploads are not any faster – that is where it becomes an issue of cost to the end user.
One other neat trick to use is that if you’re job is not urgent, do the transfers overnight instead of having people and pc “sitting idle”.
I agree with most others here on the forum about email. I’ve actually started shutting my Outlook down so I only look at it three times a day. If someone has an urgent message or document for me, they can phone me – so far I’ve lost no clients on suddenly becoming much more effective in my day-2-day business.
However: [David See]“One of our main clients has one person who, when you send video updates for approval, refuses to acknowledge receipt of them, even if you attach a message saying “Hi there xxxx, here are the latest updates, please acknowledge receipt so I am not under the impression you have received it when in fact you haven’t”, or words to that effect.”
We use a Yousendit corporate account for sending videos for approval, viewing etc. It is great in that it allows us to track when the client down-loads the video and how many times. And sometimes we even protect it, so if the file is passed around an organisation or a “group” of clients, each individual has to set up a Yousendit account to download it, which gives us even more monitoring facilities. It won’t tell you that they’ve seen the actual video – but you’ll know that they’ve got it.

Like Michael, my company is in central London too. Our trade is badly down this year on last year, but we are starting to see a recovery. Luckily I’ve done a spread bet offering several services; so with the UK broadcasters being in trouble and the overseas feature film market that we’ve enjoyed killed off by the previous chancellor, I’ve refocussed on production and production services targeted mainly at SME’s with a focus on quick turn around and affordability – we tend to a lot of shoot and edit for mobile, web and DVD. Currently we are doing some (for us) aggressive marketing to drive the name out to new clients.

This is an interesting thread. As much as I agree with Bob, we’ve found in our company that the rule-book for getting payment by good clients has gone out of the window. Recently I had to “take the gloves off” after finding a large blue-chip agency suddenly wanting 90-180 days of credit instead of the usual 30 days of payment terms. The net result is that we can only do cash business with them, which means no business because their organisation can’t handle that.
Despite looking at an autumn with the potential of getting a lot of work from that firm, I’ve decided that would rather starve than financing a big company’s bottom line. A very difficult choice – but I know that we’ve stepped in last minute in the past to do the best, most flexible and very cost effective work that these guys can get…
So no; loyal customers maybe, but if they move the goal-post for payment without telling you then that might bring down your business too. So do watch out for behavioural changes with even your best clients – there is nothing worse than a (new) finance director who are out to prove himself and making your firm a victim in the process of doing so.

I absolutely agree with your point. My turn-off to advertiser are to point out that if I phoned up 10 producers that I really wanted to work with in any random order, and invited them to the most expensive restaurant in town for lunch: I would most likely get their ear for at least 1 hour + it would be cheaper than doing a “random hitting” advert. And I woulnd’t have to do a hard sell either – the food and wine would take care of that.
BTW: Don’t invite them all at the same time – do 1-on-1’s only 🙂

I have to agree with Robert. Our firm is currently looking at the next “big” thing, and with the recent cost reduction of a Avid Symphony Nitris with hardware (NOT including drives), it is not that more expensive than a FCP (Double + 15% on a trade in). So when you take the real-time functionality, support and that you can in the right market charge more per hour, then it is not such a difficult decision.
Our facility is PC based, so it has to be added that we also use the Adobe premium suite extensively.

Sounds specialized to me, so find out who is the person within those potential new clients that would be doing the hiring? If possible once you have their name, ask them whether you can 1) demonstrate your ability & 2) offer you services – if they say no; ask why not? Since you are the best and most cost effective as proven by your existing clients, they should at least try you.
A much faster way could be to ask your happy clients whether they would mind recommend you, or if they know people that would be happy for you to contact. Nothing beats a letter that starts with “Mr. Jones of Abe Law Firm suggested that I should introduce my services to yourself… bla.bla.bla. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, at your convenience I would very much like the opportunity to meet with you to show some of my work and references.”

Word of mouth and client references is the absolutely best way to get clients.
I find emails to easy goes into the delete box (which is what I tend to do myself with spam). However, you can buy mailing lists or services of email marketing companies. I’ve never used them, but a good advice is first to decide what your target market is? How to follow up on any inquiries? + the basics of having a good website, just in case you do get a hit.
