    Hey Aldo,

I would not advice the zip option as most corporate firewalls won’t allow that to happen.

However, if you are able to open the pdf file, then the browser pdf reader should give the option for the user to save it – normally it is a small disk item either at the top right or floating at the bottom left.

Most web savvy people would right-click the link and do a save as, rather than open the file.

One alternative suggestion, which may help on your CRM too is to ask the user a few personal details, such as name, organisation and email address in return for you emailing them the pdf. You should be able to automate this and it is a great way to capture data. Just don’t misuse the data, so make sure that you following the data protection laws where-ever you are based.

    Hey Mark,

With all due respect; I do think that the point is as much as we video professionals can find new and engaging CTA’s, the old fashioned telephone number is for many people still a viable way to communicate. Whether the number features on an advert, direct TV commercial, in programme or indeed on a count-down clock, do not underestimate the power of the telephone and that personal touch that helps the customer decide that your firm is a nice one.

One important point though: it was not the invention of the first telephone that made the difference, it was only when the second one came into existence (+ the cable connecting them), that it really took off 😀 And so it is that the telephone will only work on commercials if there are someone around to answer the call.

May I add, without having a clue about phone numbers, that some years back one of my broadcast masters for an unnamed very big client got stuck on the count-down clock on air – that sparked a phone call from Spain to London about budget for doing a golf commercial…

Nothing wrong with phone numbers or business details or website – it shows that the business exist – my 5p 🙂

    Hey Dan,

Sounds exciting. As you mention, CG items can be added in post. The more difficult part, is the actors.

Gravity and humans together is the one thing that are difficult to fake. Maybe do a close-up where you just flip the actor around (without the whole set) to get the realistic feeling of hair and glasses following gravity – and the actors horrific look? 🙂

Use of fans at the right moment is another way of doing it.

Just a few thoughts – but it sounds like you’ve got it covered.

    Fantastic! Made me laugh 🙂

Just tell them that it is a requirement from the insurance that no guns appears. Also, that guns frowned up on in the overseas Television markets – that might help.

Just remember to frisk them , in case they’ve concealed the guns…

    Good Luck.

    Hey Sam,

Setting aside that if it is for a video/film shoot that you might want to have an armourer with you to make sure that all weapons are secure and save grief with insurance and unions later.

The more important point is that if your shoot is not registered, then there is a good possibility that a chance walker-by will call the police. They will shoot before asking questions – at which point any right or wrong becomes a moot point. Like all weapons on set or location, it is important to have the local authorities on board where ever you are, to avoid costly mistakes. You may also want to ensure that you have at least one person with first aid experience and know where the local A&E is located.

    My 5p.

    Well Mike,

As always Bob has got good points – nothing like “having a bit of fun”.

However, in the world that you’ll be working in, when the vacancy advert says “graduate”, then that means graduate – as in that the initial software that does the selection for the now not so potential employer won’t understand all your other qualities as in that your application didn’t tick the box 😉

The alternative is to build your own network, and the best place to start is at college, even if you only want to talk with the girls. But a nice place to make loads of mistakes, whilst learning, is not a bad place to be.

Andy, Andy, Andy – do not take your anger out on a young student with great hopes. It is not his fault that the industry has changed.

Mike, as several people has said, keep doing what you are doing and loads of it. If you are for the technical side of the industry, only hours and experience can put you ahead of the pack. If you are dreaming about directing, producing or journalism, I would go for political science, history or English university courses, rather than the media centric ones.

Andy, you need to step up to a professional level where the clients can’t get your expertise anywhere else, and the students will beg to follow in your footsteps.

  • I use yousendit and prefer it any day of the week over dropbox for client delivery. The perfect thing is that I can easily track when and what my clients have downloaded – this is really important when it comes to the client who forgets that they’ve got the master video file…

Dropbox on the other hand is great for sharing folders between colleagues and family – beats Yousendit any day of the week.

HighTail is a bit of an odd name – as long as it continues to have the same old great service, then I’m happy.

That last comment was really discriminating. Not hating Danish people!
