    Dan,

    do you know of a way to force a composition expression to reload the external file? I notice that if I make and save changes in an external file the changes don’t update unless I switch the layer’s visibility on or off, or toggle the “=” sign next to the expression, or close and re-open the project. I’m using this technique for a bunch of lower 3rds so it’d be nice if there was a quick way to force them all to reload…

  • Seem to have solved my problem…

    held down option command shift at startup of PS and checked “Yes” to erase the settings file

    Also updated the plugin I was using; one or the other seems to have worked

    When I said “take away that line” I mean that if I take out the line where I tried to define a “Popup” controller, the code works again. It’s since been confirmed by Todd Kopriva (Region of Interest Blog) that although the controller type seems to be defined there, it’s not supported.

    Too bad.

    This is an aside;
    but Kevin that is interesting information given your response to my other post —

    If there are no printed manuals, and the installer discs all contain the same language support (English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and some Chinese), what is the difference between the various versions of the software if I buy it in Germany vs. France or the UK or U.S./Canada?

    Just the printing on the box?

  • You can nudge position of an item using option-arrowkey, if you have the canvas selected; I believe adding the shift key in to this combination may nudge it by larger amounts.

    Otherwise, you can also alter most motion tab controls by hovering the mouse over the control and rolling your mousewheel…

    Most motion tab stuff is pretty quick to use I find, given the mouse-wheeling but I absolutely agree that keyframing has always sucked and it seems continues to suck

    PS–BTW you could actually do what you describe in FCP, by deselecting the option to “Relink Externally Modified Files” in the preferences, and using the “Reconnect Media” option directly on your clip in the Timeline and pointing it to your new revision of the file. I tend to keep “Reconnect Media” mapped to CTRL-CMD-R on my keyboard because I use it fairly often to change source files for clips…

    but like I said, my respect for MC is growing

    Thanks for both of the above responses. I knew there was a sensible way to do this;

    so now, based on what else I’ve read, if I’ve installed the Avid PE Codecs on the same system I’m using AE on, I should be able to render directly to an Avid Codec (which support Alpha too), and which MC should recognize and allow the Import step to be faster, is that correct? (basically just copy and not transcode)

    Because I notice from reading around forums, that despite this a lot of editors render to Animation codec out of AE and choose to let MC transcode. Is there a caveat to that somewhere?
