April 21, 2008 at 3:37 pm in reply to: Graphics Card

    Hi Floh,
Been having some “freezing” and speeding up (high revs) of fan issues with the Mac and Media 100 will not run. Took it in to the Apple store and they say it looks like the graphics card is not working properly. With the Media100 HDX card set installed I get the symptoms as described above. Without it, the cpu works except the fan on the graphics card does not work. I have two sets of Media100 HDX cards so was able to try a swap, but both card sets results in the same symptoms, hence my shopping for a graphics card. The Apple store also tried other cards and got the same results.\
“About this Mac” identifies the slot as “PCI Cards”. The card I am replacing is actually an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. How would I identify the difference between PCI Express and PCI-X?
    Thanks,
    lc

    Hi,
In conjunction with Flo’s suggestion, try exporting your timeline using “by Reference” mode, then import that back into M100 and see if that saves any time/processor work.
For NTSC, drop frame = 29.97 fps, non-drop frame = 30 fps. You should check your camera’s frame rate setting, time line frame rate setting, deck frame rate setting, and make sure they are all the same.
I have also had issues with Media100’s firewire interface with these decks and have gone with the Sony HVR 1500 for it’s rs422 interface. Much better!I don’t know how you would use rs 422 with your laptop though….

It’s dub and composite, so I am waiting on a dub cable which will connect to the tbc I have, and then go component out. I recon this should at least preserve the original quality!
    Thanks Tom.

    Hey,
Like John above said, if you can record it on betasp, it can be played back on betasp. It’s up to your monitors and post equipment to transcribe the signals. For example, we switch between 16×9 and 4×3 as needed using our aging DXCd35ws camera docked with a betasp deck to record on. We do edit with our Media100’s set to 16×9 then output as needed, conforming to 4×3 if needed. We also do the same when we shoot hd (which is also 16×9 format), but that’s another story.

Thanks for your response Bob. My reason for thinking about SDI is only if I can get a tbc with this feature. Should still be a better option than composite if it’s available. If not, composite will do fine.

    Hi,
From my own recent experience with Media100 and a firewire deck don’t depend on this worklow too much. If you have been “hot-plugging” (pluging and un-plugging the deck/camera while the cpu/camera is on) chances are the connectors and circuits have been burnt out. Sony wanted US$1,500 to replace the firewire card in our M10u (US$2K) recently and they returned it with a note taped to the deck about this. I ended up purchasing the Sony HVR1500 which has rs422 interface. It still offers firewire but also sdi-hd/sd, rgb, etc. Works like any other beta or dvcam deck, very accurate and Media100 works VERY WELL with it versus firewire.

    Hi all,
This is a situation I have been wanting to address. When we do conforming from 16 x 9 to 4×3 letterbox all the graphics are out of place and time efx (slo-mo) do not render correctly. I also have an annoying situation when trimming in the timeline. The clip that is visible during trimming is always the dominant clip, even when that is not the clip being trimmed. All this is while editing 16 x 9 sd. Are these problems fixed in 12.2?
    My system: OSx 10.4.10, dual 2.5 GHz G5, 2Giggs ram.Huge 1.2terrabyte. Media 100 11.5.1 HDX.
    Thanks,

    >Thanks again Floh. Don’t know what we’d do without you.< Give up video editing with a Media100 and go sit on a beach with a fishing pole and a cold Red Stripe (Jamaican beer)! 😉 lc
