    Hi Alessa,

Resolve and UltraScope cannot be run on the same Mac Pro for several reasons, one of which is that Resolve requires a dedicated GPU but UltraScope would be battling to dominate the same GPU card. Both applications have very demanding graphics requirements so this just isn’t going to work.

Adding another graphics card isn’t going to be possible as you’ll just run out of all 4 slots for 2x graphics cards for Resolve, 1 graphics card for UltraScope, a DeckLink card for monitoring, an UltraScope card and that’s not to mention a HBA card to storage. Low cost Windows PC’s can be used as dedicated, cost-effective PC’s for UltraScope and that’s what most UltraScope customers would use.

There are a bunch of other reasons why the two products could not be run on the same computer but I think the above reasons are enough.

    Hi David,

I searched the legacy Echolab manuals and found only one that might be what you need. It is for the Nova 1716. Please email me at luke[at]blackmagic-design.com and I will email it to you.

October 7, 2010 at 11:15 pm in reply to: Intensity Pro with PPC g5 (PCI-e)

    Hi James,

While the Intensity Pro card will appear to “work” with the G5, you are very likely to encounter random lockups of the G5 requiring a hard reboot. Other times you may not be able to start the G5 at all. It’s an unpredictable and erratic bug which was not resolved between 3 or 4 hardware vendors and so that’s why we say that G5’s are unsupported as this unreliability is unacceptable.

October 6, 2010 at 11:00 pm in reply to: Does 32GB of Ram Decrease Performance for Resolve…?!

    Hi Ryan,

The preference for 6, 12 or 24 GB of RAM only applies to the 2009 and 2010 models of Mac Pro. Please download the latest DaVinci Resolve for Mac Configuration Guide and you’ll see that the Early 2008 Mac Pro series can use 8 GB or more RAM. In other words, 32 GB of RAM will be fantastic for your Early 2008 Mac Pro.

The October 2010 edition of this guide also provides some additional information specific to the Early 2008 Mac Pro.

October 6, 2010 at 4:12 am in reply to: Software RAID and bootcamp

    Hi Vladimir,

Firstly, I don’t know the answer to your question, but …

The version of Boot Camp provided with Mac OS X 10.6 includes a Mac OS X file system read feature. You can disable this feature to ensure that Windows does not see any Mac volumes including your software RAID. That should eliminate concerns about Windows tinkering with your Mac RAID volume. This information has been copied and modified from an Apple support note unrelated to your question.

To disable the Mac OS X file system read feature:
    1. Click Start, then Computer.
    2. Double-click on the BOOTCAMP (C:) drive.
    3. Double-click on the Windows folder.
    4. Double-click on the System 32 folder.
    5. Double-click on the drivers folder.
    6. Locate the file AppleMNT (it is a .sys file) and rename it to something like AppleMNT_keep.
    7. Restart Windows
    8. Windows should no longer be able to see your Mac volumes.

Please be aware that subsequent Boot Camp updates may install another AppleMNT.sys and therefore re-enable the Mac OS X file system read feature. So you might want to keep a record of this procedure in case you have to repeat it in the future.

  • Hi Gary,

We mentioned the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for Mac in the latest guide even though it is not due to ship until November and even though it is not yet certified for use with Resolve.

We kept hearing rumours that the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 for Mac would be discontinued (true) and so there was speculation that Mac users would not be able to find a graphics card to run with Resolve (false). We just wanted to reassure everyone that there would be a GPU card they could buy which would run with Resolve for Mac once the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 was no longer available.

October 5, 2010 at 1:27 am in reply to: Resolve on Mac 7.0.2 update

    Hi Gabriele,

Resolve 7.0.2 works with a certified 2008 Mac Pro for SD and HD in real time and full quality. When working in HD, set the “Video bit depth” to “8 bit” in the Video Monitoring preferences of the Configuration screen. This has no impact on render or tape quality and all SDI I/O is at full bit depth quality.

The certified 2008 Mac Pro configurations are:

    • Early 2008, Two 2.8GHz Quad Core
    • Early 2008, Two 3.0GHz Quad Core
    • Early 2008, Two 3.2GHz Quad Core

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6.4
    Optical Drive: 1 x SuperDrive
    RAM: 8 GB or more

This info will very soon be published in an updated Resolve for Mac Configuration Guide.

September 29, 2010 at 1:55 am in reply to: GUI Graphics card Clarifications

    Hey Walter,

Thanks very much for your information. That’s great news and useful to other people in this forum.

I love the irony of the latest Mac Pro doing away with the need for a Small Tree Ethernet Card but also a new product from Small Tree doing away with the need for a Mac Pro. That’s beautiful 🙂
