Hi Lars,
Which formats have you tried, eg PAL, NTSC, HDTV1080? Were you using an 8 or 10 bit easy setup or something else?

We don’t have a general upgrade path for DeckLink cards as we try to keep the price down from the outset so that they are affordable for everyone. As Paul mentioned, there is quite a healthy second-hand market for DeckLink cards but many DeckLink owners keep them in their older computer and disk array as it is nice to have a second system for SD work and then use a newer system for HD work. Sometimes it is more valuable to keep the old system running than selling it off and it just depends on your needs.

Hi Daniel,
The new Dual Core PC’s are very good value and comparitively inexpensive for SD video, eg the P5WD2 Premium. This is an Intel Dual Core motherboard which we have tested and it works very well for SD.

Hi Simon,
This problem is unrelated to the presence or absence of DeckLink hardware. You should be able to render to the Blackmagic codec without hardware being present.
If you have installed the DeckLink 5.0 drivers, then there should not be a Blackmagic 10-bit codec in the list of available codecs. You would need to choose the (Apple) Uncompressed 10-bit codec. If you have installed the DeckLink 4.8 drivers, then there will be both an Apple and Blackmagic 10-bit codec. Unfortunately QuickTime suffers from a problem where it will sometimes invoke one codec even though you have specified another one and this can lead to weird problems. It is because of this, and upon Apple’s request, that we have standardized upon the Apple codecs in the DeckLink 5.0 drivers as this avoids such issues.
If you find you have both codecs installed, you could try temporarily removing the FCP Uncompressed 422.component from /Library/QuickTime/. Then launch After Effects and perform your render and see if that helps.

I have spoken with Kristian who has been helping you with this problem via email. He has already verified that sync is working fine on our test suites in both 8-bit and 10-bit PAL.
* Can you tell me which easy setup you have chosen in Final Cut Pro HD 5.0.2?Please remove all PCI cards from your G5 except for the DeckLink card. Then create a new project in Blackmagic Deck Control using a Blackmagic PAL JPEG easy setup and configure it to capture to your internal hard disk.
* Does the same problem still occur?Please let us know either way and it would be great if you would continue to copy Kristian on your answers. If the problem does continue to occur, then we might ask you for a copy of your project file so that we can use it to attempt to replicate your problem on our test suite.

Yes, you planned system sounds great with one possible exception. There are several different models of the G5 Dual 1.8 and you need one with PCI-X slots as the ones that only have PCI are not currently compatible with DeckLink cards. This problem has existed for over a year now and so I am not sure if Apple are going to be able to address the speed of the PCI slots. However any of the models with PCI-X are fine and you can find more details about the G5/1.8 in the technical note No video output from PowerMac G5 (PCI). I’ll let others speak to the quality but you will be happy 🙂

Thanks for trying the JPEG test which pretty much rules out a disk-related problem. I logged a bug in Apple’s Radar bug-tracking system and it was assigned bug number 4202894. While I have not received any conclusive feedback as yet, it does sound as though this is a QuickTime problem and the comment was made to me (by an Apple contact) that, “This kind of behavior is not totally unknown to us.” I did not get the impression that your problem had been examined by Apple when that comment was made. However given that the problem did seem to be familiar to some Apple people, and given that problems are seen even when our drivers are totally removed, it does seem likely that this will need to be resolved by a QuickTime update. If there is anything we can do to help resolve this issue, we will. We hope to receive some definitive feedback from Apple soon.

Thanks for this and your following posting. I’ve asked the engineers to check this DV issue out thoroughly if they haven’t already. We should know more next week.
In regards to DV on Mac, Final Cut Pro currently does not support mixing of DV with uncompressed formats on the same timeline so this is a non-issue on the Mac. The latest Final Cut Pro HD does allow for mixing of some formats with DeckLink cards but not DV with uncompressed.
