We’ve been shooting mostly at 24P, which is when we’ve been noticing fluctuation. When we shoot at 60 it’s either for recrees or aerials, so sync sound is not something we’ve been concerned with (but for my own curiosity I’ll be paying more attention to it in the future). As far as the oscillating thing goes, I was able to get a response from an engineer at Panasonic who essentially said that yes, it does fluctuate, but it’s so slight that a fixed 2 frame offset will do the trick.
    Thanks for all your help!

Many thanks to all who posted. This certainly clears things up a bit. The best move for us is to compensate for the offset when we capture. My only question at this point is does the Varicam consistently record at 2 frames out or does it oscillate between being in-sync to being 2 frames out? (A video engineer outside the forum told me it behaves this way, and I do seem to have some footage that seems to be only 1 frame out). Jeff’s point that “various processing requires different times to process the video” also stands out in my mind as a reason for oscillating.
    Thanks again everyone, much appreciated!

    July 22, 2005 at 6:06 pm in reply to: 23.98 sync problems w/ Kona2

We’re having similar problems with 23.98 DVCPROHD Varicam workflow on capture. Using G5/Tiger10.4.2/FCP5.0.2/Kona2 with 1.1.2driver on XServe RAIDs and XSan 1.1. Getting the same sync problem via HDSDI from a Panasonic 1700: off by 4 frames. We’ve been able to isolate the problem to the Kona2, and have been told by AJA that this problem will go to their engineers for a fix. Output is frame accurate with a 2 frame offset at 60fps. I’ll let you know if we hear back from them, I’m really hoping they’ll post a fix soon.

Thanks Benny, that was our solution as well. I was hoping there might be a faster way, but when the troubleshooting starts to take longer than just replacing them then what else can you do?
    Thanks again,

Thanks Noah. There’s not much I can do about the crew not rewinding after shutting off the camera to overlap TC (we’ve had that discussion before), but I’m glad to know that blacking the tapes will protect against the seemingly random breaks that we get as well.
