23.98 sync problems w/ Kona2
We shot 2 indie movies with the CineAlta at 23.98 and have subsequently been trying to capture our clips as DVCProHD into our FCP5 system (G5 dual 2.5 Tiger 10.4.1, ADTX RAID, Kona2 with 1.1.2 driver).
We had two capture sessions, each using a different Sony JH3 unit, and we had intermittent and unpredictable sync problems with almost all the clips. We tried individual capture and batch capture. We even reloaded the same clip- sometimes it would be out of sync, sometimes not. It seems that 4 frames off is the usual error.
We could fix it all in the timeline, but we’re wooried our final EDL would be a nightmare during full HD conform as some clips are off by 1, some by 4, some not at all. Kona says they have not heard of this issue with 23.98 since their 1.1.2 driver fix. Unfortunately, we cannot afford an HD deck in the house and must rent one for capture sessions, or even for testing. Is anyone having similar problems with 23.98 HDCAM to DVCProHD via the Kona2? -

try downloading the latest kona driver 1.1.2..that should fix the problem

The very night I noticed the problem I went to the Kona support area of the AJA web site and saw a sync issue described there along with its fix– so I downloaded and installed the 1.1.2 driver. After restarting several times and clearing the prefs from FCP5 the problem remained.

Referring to original post– G5 dual 2.5 Tiger 10.4.1, ADTX RAID, Kona2 with 1.1.2 driver. Since then, we upgraded to 10.4.2 OS. What other setup details…?
The latest development today is that AJA Kona support told me they are working on a fix; the problem is in the real-time downconvert to DVCProHD in FCP5. In the mean time, they suggested I use FCP 4.5 for my captures, then upgrade to FCP5 to edit. They tested this process and say it works. HDCAM deck rentals are expensive, so we can’t try it right now, but we will in a couple of weeks. -
We’re having similar problems with 23.98 DVCPROHD Varicam workflow on capture. Using G5/Tiger10.4.2/FCP5.0.2/Kona2 with 1.1.2driver on XServe RAIDs and XSan 1.1. Getting the same sync problem via HDSDI from a Panasonic 1700: off by 4 frames. We’ve been able to isolate the problem to the Kona2, and have been told by AJA that this problem will go to their engineers for a fix. Output is frame accurate with a 2 frame offset at 60fps. I’ll let you know if we hear back from them, I’m really hoping they’ll post a fix soon.

We can’t wait indefinitely; maybe you can use the interim fix Kona support tested for us…
They said to capture in FCP4.5, which they tested with a Sony JH3 HDCAM like we’d been using. With FCP4.5 there was no sync issue, and they successfully brought those FCP4.5-loaded clips into FCP5.
Our wrinkle is, during days of capture attempts for more than 50 reels of 23.98 HDCAM, we created tons of logging data which now exists in an FCP5 project as offline clips (we deleted the bad sync media files to clear space). We didn’t know how to successfully export that data backwards into FCP4.5, but a posting on the Cow’s FCP forum got us an answer: select a bin in the FCP5 project, export as XML version 1, then import into FCP4.5.
So now we’re in the process of prepping an external 250GB FW HD as a Tiger startup drive so we can install FCP4.5 within the system that includes the Kona2 and ADTX RAID.
The next steps: export all those FCP5 bins of offline clips as XML v1, import them to the FCP4.5 setup, rent an HDCAM deck again, recapture all those clips into FCP4.5, start up on the original internal drive, launch FCP5 and bring in all the captured clips. Sure hope that works. And we’ll keep in mind that according to Murphy’s law, the Kona fix for FCP5 will be released the day after we’re all done.
