Bob is right on the money in regard to Highpoint’s support department. It just doesn’t exist. On the other hand, if you absolutely need RAID 5 and are not in a position to ditch your Sonnet array for MiniSAS or Thunderbolt, you will have a hard time finding a reliable and well supported alternative in the market. You can also check with vendors such as Promax to see what they offer in terms of RAID 5 in eSATA. It may be worth your while to purchase the controller from a vendor that will back the product with support.

The WD RE4 will definitely meet your performance requirements without sacrificing reliability. We use the RE4 drives in our mission critical, SATA-based solutions with excellent results. I personally do not have any experience with the Velociraptor models. I would stay away from drives labeled as GP (Green Power) or LP (Low Power). They are known to be flakey when used in RAID configurations.

Budget will be the determining factor. I would recommend a reliable drive model such as the WD RE4 enterprise-class drives or Hitachi. Both offer top performance and reliability.

I would think about installing two 2TB internal drives and setting those up in RAID-1 (mirror). You can then RAID-0 your external LaCie drives and perform incremental backups to your mirrored drive set.

    Thomas,
You can use up to four Port Multiplier arrays (or single eSATA drives) at the same time with the RR2314. The Highpoint RR2314 will allow you to create multiple RAID groups (R0, R5, etc.) as well as single drive JBOD volumes.

If you are planning on shipping a bare drive you should think about getting a protective “anti-static” case and wrapping that in bubble wrap. The case will run you an extra $10 but worth the price if do not want the added risk.

A good anti-static bag wrapped in bubble wrap would also do the trick.
