November 27, 2014 at 4:37 pm in reply to: Second Preview Monitor Not Working

    Thanks for the suggestion Brett

I knew about dragging the program window to the second monitor (I been doing that for years). The thing is that on the Lynda tutorial the program window automatically goes full screen when the options in “Playback” are changed. That is not working on my end. Any suggestions?

October 22, 2014 at 5:14 am in reply to: How much time do you spend creating motion graphics?

Depending on the projects but almost always is 30+hours. I estimate the time a motion graphic will take after I make a detailed script, a storyboard and sometimes a rough guideline on a piece of paper with a couple of notes. One of the most important things for me is spending a couple of hours organising all the assets in folders and subfolders because that saves a ton of time later on.

One thing that I am doing now is creating After Effects and Premiere project templates to use in the future. That way I can easily modify them to new needs and save a lot of time.

That video is very impressive. I had a similar situation with this video that I recorded by a pure miracle. I been contact two times by two different news networks to buy that video and what I eventually did was to upload it to Pond5, a stock media marketplace, and point interested buyers to the site. The first reason I did that was because when I sold the video to the news networks they ask to sign a contract which indicated the pricing and their conditions of payment. And the second reason was because the payment (a check send via mail) took like half a year to arrive. That really suck because in Pond5 if I make the sale I get the commission at the beginning of each month. I only get 50% of what I ask but I honestly prefer that to having to deal with legal contracts from the news media.

As for what you should ask for your video wait until what they tell you what they are willing to give you for your video. Then respectfully ask for $50-$200 more of what they offered. They will most likely tell you they won’t be able to give you what you ask, but if you keep negotiating you may be able to get at least a little bit more of what they were originally going to give you. If you can’t negotiate then just get what they give you, don’t lose the deal since that extra money in your pocket will prove useful. Be warn though, your video is worth at least $150 because is quite unique.

October 17, 2014 at 7:50 am in reply to: Why use Audition for editing dialog together?

The benefit of using Audition over Premiere is that you have many options to edit your audio. There are many audio effects you can add in Audition and you can even insert a video into a multitrack session to make cutting easier. In most of my projects I use Audition noise removal and normalising effects to greatly improve the overall quality of the audio from a video I recorded.

I also tend to work a lot faster in Premiere than I do with Audition, but the end result of the audio is worth it. I’m currently looking for ways to make my Audition workflow faster. Let’s see how it goes.

I forgot to mentioned something that I find extremely essential, working with multiple monitors. When I work with After Effects (Premiere, Photoshop and even Blender) I always use two monitors and setup the workspace accordingly. I been editing like this for so many years that when I don’t have a second monitor I feel kind of unproductive :-).

    Thanks for the reply George

About shape layers, isn’t it better to create shapes in Illustrator since they are vector based and there are more options to edit there?

As for Lynda, I been a premium member for years. Right now I’m watching the course titled “Getting Started with After Effects Expressions”.

Excellent advise. Luckily I had cultivated very serious organisational skills for all my projects. Is a learning process of course, since each time I try to make it more efficient. For example since Mavericks OS I been using the finders tabs and the desktops windows extensively to make my workflow more efficient.

You mentioned to trash every file on my desktop, I’m way ahead of you. In fact I only put “current projects” folders on my desktop. My desktop is always clean.

Naming adjustment layers is something I didn’t do before so I will be implementing that to my projects.

    Thanks for the great advise.

    Hi Ann

How do you feather with the track matte effect (I have CS5.5)? I trail-error for a while, but couldn’t figure it out. I always do this sort of thing in AE, but is good to know how to do it on Premiere just in case.

One way of accomplish this in Premiere is inserting a duplicate clip above the original. Use a garbage matte on clip above (Video 2) to mask the area that you don’t want to have the dof. On the clip below (Video 1) add a Gaussian Blur effect. When you do this the background image (the one you did not mask) will be blurred out simulating the dof effect. There are two big issues with this technique:

    * Your video should be static (no camera movement at all) . If not you will have to mask frame by frame.
    * The garbage matte of Premiere does not have “mask feather” (available in AFX). Without this the mask looks hard and too lineal.

Like others mentioned After Effect works best for this effect.

July 28, 2011 at 4:57 pm in reply to: Change Font Color When Motions over Object

When you apply a Track Matte effect the above layer will automatically hide from the composition. That because the track matte show the above layer inside the below layer. All tech talk aside, all you need to do to fix this is un-hide the text layer by pressing the eye (located in the left of every layer in timeline). Is important to put the text blending mode into “Color Burn” to show the color changes when the text move.
