Use Toast to create an image file of the DVD. Then burn your copies from the Toast image.

I have this problem as well but it is intermittent. Sometimes just putting in another blank DVD-R DL would solve it. I never really got around to asking Sonic support about this as I have always been able to get it to work by either changing media, restarting computer, or closing/reopening project. Another thing I do that seems to have prevented this from happening a lot is before I check the premastering box, I put the blank in and wait for the drives light to go out. Then click the check box and choose the drive. It should only give you burn speeds associated with that media. If you see a max of 16X then it definitely thinks you have single layer media.Go ahead and try a DVD+R DL and see if that works also.

We use Microboards, Microtech, and Rimage duplicators. I would say your best bet for what you need is to go with Microboards. Ours have been very stable. The thing you have to remember with any duplicator is eventually a drive or two will crap out on you in which you will need to replace the drives.

Linda, most towers that I know of cannot be hooked up to a computer to burn directly from the authoring software. What you would do is burn a one off from Architect and then place that master into the tower and duplicate your other copies from that.
That being said if you burn your master from DVD Architect and it has menus, the duplicator will make exact copies, menus and all (Even if you have ROM content).

Hhah yeah I used to go up to Toronto all the time while I was in school in Buffalo. I’m in Tampa now and it is beautiful. Miami is a little too far south for me! Good luck with your projects!
Oh and just remember that Hollywood manufactures million upon millions of DVD’s every year with very complex menus and navigation and about 99.9% of them work fine in all players.

Menu creation is only a part of DVD authoring. So long as the DVD is authored in a program that creates a DVD-Spec compliant DVD then it should play in all DVD players as they have to abide by the DVD specification as well. It makes no difference whether it has a menu or not.
You employees are right. Except you can create on any platform (Mac/PC).
There are many factors that can make a DVD not play in a player. Sometimes it has to do with the menu but that has nothing to with the menu “being there” it is up to the author to make sure they authored the disc correctly (menus and movies).
Aren’t you guys a replicator? Are you looking to get into authoring or just trying to prove the boss wrong? Is it still cold in Toronto?

The folder that has all the assets and DVDSP project file. just copy that to an external hard drive. So long as you kept everything organized when the post house opens the project they will just need to relink a few assets (the rest should relink on their own after selecting one file). If your DVDSP project file is not in that folder just do a save as within DVDSP and save it to your project folder.
No need to copy any PAR folders within the project folder. Wont hurt if you do though.
In a nut shell make sure your project folder is organized and assets are properly named. copy the entire folder to HD. Send to post house. Make sure post house isn’t using Compressor to transcode. Make sure post house will allow you to send this project in to them.

Yes you can have the 10 bit video in place of the menu as well. Just make sure your instruction say to encode that video as well. As long as you dont build the project it will not encode the videos. just save the project and place the project folder on a firewire/usb harddrive and send off.

So in terms of the delivery format, I would firstly create a dvd menu in DVDSP containing graphics and layout etc and deliver this with all the seperate (uncompressed)tracks and let the authoring company do the rest???swa
-Yep you can have the whole project ready to go (navigation, linking, button highlights, etc)and even have the uncompressed quicktimes in the tracks. These are easy to switch out with mpeg2 files. Just make sure where ever you are sending this they are willing to do this type of service.
1/ What is V210, is it similiar to uncomp 10 bit?
-Yes, V210 is an Aja codec, uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2. Cinema Craft seems to enjoy that codec for compression.
2/ what kind of file/format would i have to deliver the dvd menu project as so it could be edited and the tracks laid on, ie would I have to make sure that the company uses fcp and DVDSP?
-Yes if you are using DVDSP to author make sure thats what they are using as well. That way they can just open the project and swap out the quicktime files.
