Just did this on Monday. Our client supplied the authored DVDSP project with everything complete except for the movies were not compressed to mpeg2 yet (supplied as uncompressed QuickTime v210). We then used our SD-2000 and Cinema Craft encoders to create the mpeg2 files and placed them in the project and output. Saved me time and saved the client money and got way better results then Compressor (by itself) could do.

Another option if you are going to be doing a lot of these projects and are running FCP6 on an Intel box then you may want to invest in the Cinema Craft MP plugin.

I wouldn’t even say “yet”. I doubt it will ever have scripting.

The Premiere Trial should have Encore bundled with it.

From the release notes. You do have to pay for the upgrade if you do not have the Sonic Support.

Scenarist SD 3.2 includes the following enhancements:
    • The Activator Code dialog now shows the dongle serial number.
    • SST Subtitle files can be dragged and dropped directly from Windows Explorer on to a track or on an empty
    subpicture stream in Track Editor.
    • Scenarist SD now supports importing chapter lists and Sonic StreamData™ files.

    Resolved Issues
    Resolved Issues in Scenarist 3.2.1

    • The “Open” Button in the Project Manager is now available when a scenario file is selected after a fresh
    installation.
    • CSV files are now imported correctly for streams that do not start at timecode 00:00:00:00.
    • Importing CSV files now assigns the correct name to the first chapter.
    • The application no longer crashes when clicking “Next Subpicture” or “Next Audio” during simulation of a
    menu.
    Resolved Issues in Scenarist 3.2
    • Scenarist Basic and Studio LE Editions now support creation of Dual Layer projects.
    • Scenarist no longer silently exists when writing a disc image file larger than 4GB to a FAT32 formatted hard
    disk.
    • Writing to DLT now correctly sets the Master ID for the project.
    • The simulation window now correctly displays source files with a width of 704 pixels.
    • The command “Set Audio Stream and Link Tail PGC” will now simulate correctly in Hardware Simulation.
    • When switching subtitles on or off during simulation, the value of SPRM 2 is now set correctly.
    • When drawing a button marquee on a menu, the end coordinates are now correctly validated so that the
button is inside the video window.
    • During simulation from the First Play PGC, the timecode counter is now updating correctly.
    • If the connection between a video track and a slide show is set to “seamless,” the user is now prompted for
    confirmation.
    • The “Import Subtitle” dialog no longer shows in the task bar.
    • If a Highlight section ends in the middle of a VOBU, the Highlight information is no longer discarded.
    • It is no longer possible to add PAL tracks into a scenario that already contains NTSC assets. When adding the
first track to a scenario, the default resolution is adjusted accordingly.
    • Scenarist SD no longer crashes on PCs with multiple cores or hyperthreading enabled.
    • Scenarist SD no longer crashes on large projects that contain slideshows.
    • The VTS_EA in the VTS_*_0.IFO files is now being calculated correctly. If an asset duration is longer than the
duration specified for placeholder, then the duration is now extended to span the full asset duration.
    • If the UOP for NextPGSearch() is disabled, the Simulation Window no longer prevents skipping backwards.
    • When an illegal asset is dragged from Windows Explorer directly into Scenario Editor, empty cells are no
    longer created.
    • Scenarist no longer silently exits if a template file has been marked read-only.
    • Data, Track, and Scenario Element names may no longer contain slash or asterisk characters.
    Scenarist 3.2.1 Release Notes – 2/5/08 10
    • If the multiplexer detects an incorrect VOBU size, multiplexing will now cancel.
    • Attempting to open a Scenario file which is set to read-only no longer causes the application to close.
    • The radio buttons in the Application Preference dialog are now grouped correctly.
    • The “Default Subtitle Duration” specified in the Default Settings dialog is now correctly used when creating
    subtitles.
    • DVD-R discs burned from Scenarist SD are now finalized.
    • Parental Level 8 (unrated) is now supported.

    Simulation Window.

We had to downgrade from Scenarist 3.2 back to 3.1. We were getting a runtime error when checking the premastering box in the layout tab. I guess 3.2 got released a little premature since there have been other problems that have arose. See below, straghit from Sonic support.

“A conflict with the Frame Grabbing module has surfaced which causes Scenarist 3.2 to crash. Please disable frame grabbing, (Note:this will likely disable Software Simulation), by renaming the file “ScenaristDVDNav.dll” in the target folder to something else like .old and also renaming the files in the “Filters” subdirectory. Then launch Scenarist again and find out if it’s more stable.

As stated, Frame Grabbing (and Thumbnails) won’t work.

We apologize for this inconvenience, please know that Sonic is researching this issue.”

    Thanks Sonic!

You are correct Max, DEFINITELY make sure the replicator takes DLT as well! I didn’t mean make sure they accept DDP on DVD-R/HD as a replacement for DLT. You can’t beat the error correction on the DLT.

Now for the WAMNET statement. The end result of DDP on a HD is actually the same as delivery via Wamnet. Both end up on a Hard Drive either way. It’s just that an external HD can be more secure then Wamnet. Also depending on connection speeds it can take a while to upload to Wamnet. Not to mention that even a pause in connection or dropped connection can damage the files. The DDP on DVD-R actually acts as a virtual HD as well (At least thats how Eclipse sees it). The only real problem with DDP on DVD-R is the possibilities of scratches or bad burn.

I do agree that DLT is a great way to submit masters but DLT is still expensive and slow. DLT also has the craziest compatibility chart I have ever seen for any media. You have the DLT spin wheel? It’s insane.

My main point about being wary of a replicator not taking DDP on HD or DVD-R was that they may not be using the most up to date premastering software. This could result in errors not being flagged during premastering. There is a huge difference in the errors found in Eclipse 4 to version 5 (thanks to the UDF analysis). I know with Eclipse 4.1 and up they have implemented the ability to read DDP from a DVD-R. Which is great because DVD-R is cheap and can hold a CSS encrypted DDP image. The real downside of DVD-R is it’s life expectancy.

If you are working on a PC try DVDremake Pro. You can swap out the menu graphic within there. If you are on a MAc try DVDAfterEdit. Both would be your easiest ways of just swapping out a menu graphic. If you have other changes, check over to DVD-Logic.com. He has some great tools for demuxing. Of course if you choose to Demux the entire DVD be prepared to reprogram from scratch in Encore.

Also removal of CSS is illegal, even if you are the content owner. Just an FYI.

Try contacting sales@netblender.com. They will let you know if it is still available or where to get it. Of course the Intellidisc website says it has moved to Metacommons.org so you may want to look there as well.

Yes, always check with your replicator before hand to be sure they take DDP on HD or DVD-R. however I would be a little wary of a replicator that does not accept this as an input format.
