Well, I started this thread an we’ve bought two 700’s and a 100, so I guess I can answer my own question now…yes, I would. So far so good.

Regarding your purchase of a 700 as an amateur film maker…you might want to consider the GY-HM100 instead. It’s smaller, lighter and has a shorter learning curve, not to mention that you can use less expensive batteries, tripods and steadicam, etc.

We’ve been using Transcend cards in our 100 & 700 with no problems.

We just got our first 700 delivered yesterday, so we haven’t had a chance to shoot much with it yet. I think next week we’re going to do a shootout between the Sony Z1U, A1U and the JVC GY-HM700 and 100, just to see how they all compare. I know it’s not really apples to apples, but I can’t resist.

I can’t find any info on that camera. How are you connecting it to the computer, firewire?

  • Well, you could get the GY-HM100. If you can pony up a few grand more, you’re looking at the JVC GY-HM700, although with batteries, charger, case and tripod adaptor plate, you’re looking at another $1,000 on top of that.

There’s no difference. If your computer has Firewire and you have a camera, just use that. If you have a VTR ( a deck) use that because it’ll save wear on the tape heads in your camera. Either way, firewire will look just as good as the component when it comes to HDV, plus you get deck contol and audio all through one cable.

We’ve never had ANY problem taking 1080i HDV footage into our Adobe system. Tape deck, camera, it doesn’t matter, they all work great. Use the firewire and you’ll have deck control too, even when using he camera as a VCR.

Check ou the Ikan monitors. I have their 8″ and it’s a good little HD monitor available with HDMI if you want it. I also tried their 5″ monitor last week and that had a nice picture as well, reasonably priced too.

We haven’t even thought that far yet. We were using a Glidecam V8 with our Z1U, but I always felt as though the camera was too light. With the 700 weighing 8 lbs, it’s double the heft of the Z1U, so I think it might fly better. The V8 works up to 10 lbs, so even with the battery we should be okay.

I saw this same message last week when we demo’ed a 700. In our case, the camera was set to shoot in 1080P and we were trying to review a clip on the SDHC card that was shot at 720. all we had to do was put the camera in the same record mode as the clip, and VIOLA, we could review the footage.

Now, if you’re getting this message in FCP, it sounds to me like you’re having a similar issue.
