Thanks for your help Dave, I have since tried this in both programs and have to say that fusion did a slightly better job in this case, however, like you said, this technique is rarely going to satisfy and I can now understand why.

In regards to the background, should I shoot my own or try and build it model or 3ds max form, or just use the simple effects like shatter on a 2d background?

its pretty much from scratch. i have experimented using the sphere and fractal noise, colorama etc but can’t get the desired effect.
