Thanks! The footage is DVCpro… I did suggest to them the same thing – to try and dump some footage onto the hard drive and see what happens once I take it home. I do have quicktime 7 (at least).

Thank you for all the helpful information. I’ll let you know how it turns out and will contact you if I do need help finding a decoder.

I always appreciate the support and advise from you guys!

    Thanks for responding Michael.

My Avid is on a PC.

The footage is coming from a TV show that I produce – and the station only uses FCP to edit. The show’s producers are thinking of archiving the footage (storage) onto hardrives. It will be saved on the hardrive using the FCP – giving the footage a FCP codec (I would assume). For me to be able to use that stored footage (on my avid) I would need to buy a decoder?… I don’t think I will put FCP on my machine. We’re trying to make the archived footage pretty universal… I’m just trying to know as much as I can to be able to anticipate issues down the road.

    What would you suggest?

Yes – Paul, I’m with you on everything you said. I actually spoke with someone from Avid this afternoon… and they said that sorenson and Avid DVD don’t “play nice togehter.” So – now I’m just taking my QT movie – and puting that directly into my project… and compressing within Avid DVD… all worked perfectly. My video looked different before the burn… but it worked out.

Thank you for all your help! I really appreciated it! Sorry if I seemed like a spaz, but I had been using a different authoring software. After switching to Avid DVD for a while now – never encountered this issue… that’s why I couldn’t understand what was up. Fun!

Hope you’re having a good week!

    Paul,

Thank you for your response. I’m actually compressing in Sorenson. My movie is only 2.05 GB. When I put it into the project it becomes WAY over!! THAT should not be happening. Also – no matter what size compressed video (an hour – 90min., two hours) I’m getting the same error (in red) on the bottom. Something is wrong. It’s almost like it wants to make the project HD not SD.

Have you heard of a dud? I’ve been doing this for a while – and never had an issue like this. I’m sort of “new” to using Avid DVD by Sonic… so I don’t really know all the ins and outs – but my movie should fit fine. I’m really at a loss. So any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Lori

Michael – they are only 2.05 GB TOTAL. The two menu pages don’t seem to be taking up much space at all.

I almost think I have a setting wrong… because when I drag the movie into the project – I think it’s thinking it’s an HD not a SD movie. But I don’t know how to change that. Do you know of a setting like that? No matter what size video I put into the project – it says I’m over by the same ammount -630+ MB!!

Ok… that’s kind of what I thought after going through the options over and over. I was hoping that I was just missing something. Thank you. So, I just have to keep going throug the larger clips and advancing through the tabs it creates.

Thanks Gary – Yes, I went to the SONY site last night and got the driver (thank you for posting it though) I work from home and have my own Avid – so no issues on putting it on anyone else’s machines. Once installed everything was fine.

The AMA is on… not sure how to turn it off (didn’t mess with it last night) – but yes, it just instantly brings the media into the project… however – as soon as the device isn’t hooked up, the media is gone… I imported the media as well – the “old fashioned” way and all seems to be going great.

One more question if you don’t mind. The footage was shot as 16:9. Should I just apply the 16:9 letterbox in the efx drop down under reformat or do I need to be using my editing windows in a 16:9 format? Not sure if I’m being clear… I know this all may seam like the dinasaur age for times now… but my “bosses” are just getting into it. Before I left my commercial job – we didn’t do much with 16:9…

Thanks again for all your help. Take care and have a great holiday.

Hi Gary. Thanks for your help. I’m a freelancer and one of the guys I work for just dropped off the drive… so no, I did not install the driver. I can probably get it from him – or do you know if I can get it online for free from SONY.

Also – don’t mean to sound like a dope – but what is AMA.. I don’t know if it’s on or off. I’ll go see right now if I can get the PDW-U1 driver…

    Thanks again.
