Me? Short-form packages, sizzle reels, narratives here and there.

Thanks to everyone for your responses, corrections, solutions, opinions and suggestions. *whew* That’s a lot 🙂

I want to point out that I work at a company, so just ‘getting with the program’ and upgrading my OS isn’t something that suits us company-wide. It has to be a selective decision that takes time. I remain disappointed that Apple released a major update that can only be used on a new OS.

For the record, I have a laptop that I have installed 10.1 on as it’s my backup computer. I haven’t used that version yet.

Also, I have watched hours of tutorials from Lynda.com, Ripple Training, Class On Demand, Infinite Skills and Larry Jordan.

I am not one of those who jumps into something haphazardly and then complains that it doesn’t work. I have given FCPX dedicated time over the last 2 months and even told my boss that FCPX is the best for the team. I think I did so prematurely and/or I am not yet skilled enough to have made that suggestion since I do not confidently have solutions to the issues I’ve listed here nor extended experience with X.

I want to love FCPX. I have already picked up the shortcuts and am gaining speed. I love live previews of the effects and the magnitude of options. No other editing package excites me as much. BUT, I do not know of anyone else in my workflow/company using it.

Time will tell, but I do greatly appreciate all of your responses. Thanks!

I’ve gone through several tutorials including Ripple, Lynda, etc.

  • I’ve also been editing on FCP 7 for 8 years, and switched to X a couple of months ago to my regret (I started a thread about the deal-breaking issues).

Your thread helps because I was looking at Avid or Premiere. I know that Avid is the industry standard, but I am not a freelancer. I am staff, and I also prefer motion graphics and 3D, so I just want to get back to editing with ease so that I can cut and concentrate on animations and 3D again instead of studying new NLEs.

The comment about Premiere being good for AE users is interesting to me.

I prefer the precision. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve moved something only for that magnetic timeline to slip my clips and screw up my audio timing. I read that it’s best to use a Gap clip and place videos abve that to prevent slippage. That’s foolish and creates way too many workarounds for what should be very simple.

You don’t have to convince me. Coming from FCP 7, I jumped fully into FCPX. After several (2+ hour) tutorials, I got it. Ready to edit.

For two months in a row, daily, I worked on 3-4 projects (3 small, one big) in FCPX. I cannot tell you the level of frustration and disappointment (can’t lock storylines, workarounds for simple stuff like in/out points to export a section, having to create comps for simple manipulation, buggy audio peaks, etc.)

I want to start a thread but I don’t feel like putting myself out there to be stoned by FCPX enthusiasts. Hey, I wanted to love it also. Now I feel like a fool who wasted two months.

So today I tried Premiere and in the first few seconds, it just felt more pro. Being an After Effects animator, the interface was comfortable.

I may go with that or Avid, but FCPX? Only for small, personal projects that I want to apply FCPX-only plugins to.

I am having the same issue, but there’s not a CONTENTS folder on my external drive.

February 11, 2014 at 12:29 pm in reply to: FINAL CUT PRO X will not open the project or events

I have watched the tutorials (hours worth), have tried FCP X for the last 2 months on one project, went to open it this morning and FCPX doesn’t recognize the drive suddenly.

All projects are in the same place they’ve always been in.

  • My Mac Pro is from early 2008, and I am doing my first FCP X 10.0.9 project from an external drive. That said, I feel that it’s extremely slow.

I have worked off of the same system from the same external drives on FCP 7 and haven’t experienced such lags. And I know I’m supposed to work locally, but my drives are full, so…

I wanted to convince my boss to switch to FCP X, and after watching several courses (not YouTube vids, but full 2+ hour tutorials)I was very prepared to until I discovered that you can’t do basic things like select an in and out point without a workaround. I’m putting up with it, but I cannot expect a team of editors to do that.

Also, for the latest version, you must upgrade you OS? Who does that in a pro environment with tons of third party apps/plugins, etc. that aren’t guaranteed to work with a new OS yet? So I feel that a carrot (or Apple, hehe) is being waved in my face — being a better FCP X that I cannot have.

The one thing that’s keeping me interested in FCP X personally are the plugins. There are a ton, and you can preview before applying them.

But I unfortunately will have to start learning Premiere or Avid.If plugins don’t matter to you, then I would look toward other editing software.
