It’s not full NLE editing. PMB can do just cutting and joining AVCHD files. Similarly Corel… But, it should suffice…

Vegas could automatically render clips with some Video FX and more complicated editing to some temporary files and then to split/join them with the rest of the timeline…, (something that works in Vegas already for HDV material).

In fact, if Vegas can reliably render to *.mts files, using PMB you can do all the above manually already now. The problem is that Vegas claims to be able to render to mts, but the created files are often corrupted and not compatible with original Sony MTS files. Then, PMB fails to work with them.

Again, it’s funny (or rather sad). Sony created AVCHD 2.0 format and uses it for its camcorder. Sony Vegas nevertheless reliably supports mp4 that is used by Sony competitors, like JVC, Panasonic… and its own AVCHD2 *.mts does not work properly.

Thanks for the reply. I wrote the appropriate suggestion, too.
The current Vegas Mpeg2 smart rendering is (nearly) useless.

In fact, I’d appreciate the same also for AVCHD Sony mts2 files, (1920×1080, 50/60p), but although I made similar suggestion already about 2 years ago, the result is nil. Hence, I’m quite sceptical… And it is even more surprising, as Vegas is now part of Sony Corp., and the free Sony PMB can do cutting and splitting without re-rendering for a long time.

Seems to me that with Sony Vegas it’s the same story as with Adobe Premiere.

Although nobody replied me I already know the answer to my previous question: Even the newly created AVCHD 2.0 files can not be exported back to a Sony camcorder! What a pity.
Tested as follows: I used Sony Vegas Pro V.11 Build 510 (32 bit) and V.11 Build 511 (64bit) and rendered using the AVCHD 1920×1080-50i template. In the template custom setting I changed frame rate from 25i to 50 progressive and increased video rate to 26Mbips. Nothing else was changed. The files were rendered as transport streams m2ts, i.e. not mp4 available in the previous versions of Vegas Pro!
I could play the created *.m2ts on my computer but they could not be exported to my Sony camera, (using PMB, Menu->Manipulate->Export files). The export always started well but after a few minutes it fails reporting some error…. Note that at least the new m2ts files were recognized by PMB. The original *.mp4 were not.
My Linux based player Azbox plays the new m2ts files with errors. It plays the original *.mp4 much better.
What is an advantage of the new m2ts format, when it is still not compatible with Sony camcorders and third party players have more problems to play them back as compared with the previous *.mp4 files?
Hope this info may save somebody some time….

    Hello,
following the recent thread “How edit 1920×1080-50p footage and then upload it back to Sony camcorder” on this forum, could anybody advise me, if the new feature “Updated Sony AVC format render template customization to support AVCHD 2.0.” produces a video file compatible with Sony cameras’ internal player, i.e. it can be exported and played back directly in the camera? (Of course, I’m talking about a Sony camera that can shoot and play 1920×1080-50/60p footage, e.g. Sony hdr cx700, and I want to preserve this video quality).

Also, is this feature available within Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, V. 11, Build 283 that has been released very recently (it also brings the Sony Tablet 1080p etc.) and what template shall I use and what parameters should be changed to achieve the compatibility.

    Thanks.

  • Looks like it is not only Sony that is using 1920×1080-50p/60p MTS files. Does anybody know, if Sony and Panasonic camcorders use compatible 1920×1080-50p/60p MTS files?

I have Intel I7 3.07GHz based desktop with NVIDIA Quadro 580, Win7 64bit and I cant play the MP4 1920×1080-50p 26Mbits clips only with occasional drop-downs. It applies for both Windows media player and VLC media player. Media player classic HomeCinema does not play it at all…

For sure quite a number of people have the problem of playing back their progressive mode movies; in spite of they all have a camcorder that could do the job seamlessly. It’s a pity that (at the moment) Sony Vegas does not seem to help these people. Very much hope that the new version on Vegas (Platinum) will address this shortage.

    BTW:
Progressive mode offers the better quality picture not only in cases of sport scenes, but also in case of panning over countryside, mountains etc. Such clips are definitely not rare and I bring tens of them from every holiday. Hence, I believe that using 50p/60p footage is meaningful.

  • … and may-be, VEGAS will show in the future more interest in Sony advanced AVCHD V. 2 format… Anyway, I get your point! Thanks for your time.

  • Well, thanks for the answer, although I believe most Sony camcorders and Vegas users won’t fully agree with you.

    The reasons are simple:
1/ A proper 1920×1080-50p is still not readily available. Most blue-ray disc won’t cope with the progressive footage. BR-specification covers only interlaced HD footage, (as far as I know).
2/ There are some players that can deliver HD-50p, but they are expensive and often play with occasional drop downs etc. On the other hand a users like myself already has the camcorder and it plays excellently. Can you please suggest me a suitable player, (a device, not a Windows/Linux SW)?
3/ The above players are not PORTABLE and a typical friend you are going to visit (with the camcorder) has a HD TV with HDMI and no such player. PC based play back has typically low quality.
4/ I don’t see any significant advantage of MP4 files from Vegas over MTS files form Sony. Nearly same size, same quality, only MP4 is more demanding on CPU of my PC and/or Azbox HD+ player.
5/ I don’t play my video that often. The camcorder player would be sufficient for my play back.

Anyway, these are just my points. May-be I’m wrong, but I do believe that most Sony camcorder’s users would appreciate, if the new Vegas Platinum 12 version does already support to Sony Advanced AVCHD V. 2 MTS progressive format. It would certainly encourage more people to purchase/upgrade the new Vegas Platinum SW as well as to purchase new Sony camcorders delivering progressive footage.
I know that Vegas serves a broad community with diverse HW, but wishes and needs of Sony customers should be addressed with the highest priority. After all, you are Sony!!!

    Thanks again, Libor Jendele

PS. How about e.g. Panasonic camcorders and others? Do they use a proprietary 1920×1080-50p format, Vegas’s MP4 or even something compatible with Sony AVCHD V. 2 MTS (progressive)?

It’s a pity. I only tried to edit AVCHD 1920×1080-50p clip (Vegas PLatinum 11, user project setting to get 50p, Sony AVCHD 50p output codec) that has been downloaded from somewhere internet. For sure my AZBOX plays the edited movie well. It’s weird that (according to you) the camera CX700 does not!

    Hi,
I just found that the new Sony Vegas Platinum 11 is available. It should already support 1920x1080x50p format I asked about some time earlier. (It should manage even 3D).
Now, the question is: Does anybody know, if it also already support AVCHD smart rendering?
(I expect the reply “No”, but who knows… It would be great !)
    Thanks Libor
