  • How edit 1920×1080-50p footage and then upload it back to Sony camcorder

Posted by Libor Jendele on December 4, 2011 at 9:45 am

    Hello,

is it possible to edit a 1920×1080-50p, (from Sony camcorder, PS quality), render it and finally export it back to the Sony camcorder (for later playback on it)? A parameter to change?
Note, I want to preserve the original footage quality, (i.e. I don’t want to downgrade to a lower resolution or interlaced mode). Neither do I want to go for MPEG2 codec.
The MP4 file created by Vegas (Sony AVC template, progressive, 26Mbips) does not seem to be compatible with Sony camcorders. Sony camcorders are told to utilize the MTS V.2.0 Sony AVCHD progressive Ver. 2. format. Why does the Vegas Platinum use another format (that seems very similar to the Sony MTS V.2.0 format)? Most Vegas users are also users owners of Sony camcorders, so that one would expect they cooperate smoothly!
Is there a chance a new version of Sony Vegas platinum will support the MTS Sony AVC template, progressive, 28Mbips format?

    Thanks Libor Jendele

Because there is no reason to send the video back to the camcorder. A camcorder is a capture device. The fact that you can preview your footage from the camera to a TV doesn’t negate the fact that it’s a capture device. You should be making Blu-ray discs to watch your HD videos. This is the workflow that Sony’s products enable.

Well, thanks for the answer, although I believe most Sony camcorders and Vegas users won’t fully agree with you.

    The reasons are simple:
1/ A proper 1920×1080-50p is still not readily available. Most blue-ray disc won’t cope with the progressive footage. BR-specification covers only interlaced HD footage, (as far as I know).
2/ There are some players that can deliver HD-50p, but they are expensive and often play with occasional drop downs etc. On the other hand a users like myself already has the camcorder and it plays excellently. Can you please suggest me a suitable player, (a device, not a Windows/Linux SW)?
3/ The above players are not PORTABLE and a typical friend you are going to visit (with the camcorder) has a HD TV with HDMI and no such player. PC based play back has typically low quality.
4/ I don’t see any significant advantage of MP4 files from Vegas over MTS files form Sony. Nearly same size, same quality, only MP4 is more demanding on CPU of my PC and/or Azbox HD+ player.
5/ I don’t play my video that often. The camcorder player would be sufficient for my play back.

Anyway, these are just my points. May-be I’m wrong, but I do believe that most Sony camcorder’s users would appreciate, if the new Vegas Platinum 12 version does already support to Sony Advanced AVCHD V. 2 MTS progressive format. It would certainly encourage more people to purchase/upgrade the new Vegas Platinum SW as well as to purchase new Sony camcorders delivering progressive footage.
I know that Vegas serves a broad community with diverse HW, but wishes and needs of Sony customers should be addressed with the highest priority. After all, you are Sony!!!

    Thanks again, Libor Jendele

PS. How about e.g. Panasonic camcorders and others? Do they use a proprietary 1920×1080-50p format, Vegas’s MP4 or even something compatible with Sony AVCHD V. 2 MTS (progressive)?

The point is that 50p/60p is not a common delivery format. Under normal viewing conditions (i.e., not fast paced sports video) there is no need for such a high frame rate. 50p/60p is usually reserved for slow motion work. Just because camera manufacturers have created this format, it doesn’t mean you need to use it for every day shooting. I understand that you want to watch your 50p footage in 50p and that there are no players. Give it time and the players will show up if there is enough demand.

… and may-be, VEGAS will show in the future more interest in Sony advanced AVCHD V. 2 format… Anyway, I get your point! Thanks for your time.

My Panasonic Tm700 captures 1080 60p .mts. I cannot edit and render back to .mts or something my TM700 will play. I can although render to 1080 60p mp4 at the same 28 mbps bitrate and play them on my i7 computers with no problems.

Looks like it is not only Sony that is using 1920×1080-50p/60p MTS files. Does anybody know, if Sony and Panasonic camcorders use compatible 1920×1080-50p/60p MTS files?

I have Intel I7 3.07GHz based desktop with NVIDIA Quadro 580, Win7 64bit and I cant play the MP4 1920×1080-50p 26Mbits clips only with occasional drop-downs. It applies for both Windows media player and VLC media player. Media player classic HomeCinema does not play it at all…

For sure quite a number of people have the problem of playing back their progressive mode movies; in spite of they all have a camcorder that could do the job seamlessly. It’s a pity that (at the moment) Sony Vegas does not seem to help these people. Very much hope that the new version on Vegas (Platinum) will address this shortage.

    BTW:
Progressive mode offers the better quality picture not only in cases of sport scenes, but also in case of panning over countryside, mountains etc. Such clips are definitely not rare and I bring tens of them from every holiday. Hence, I believe that using 50p/60p footage is meaningful.
