You will bring the scanned image/drawing into Illustrator, then use the pen tool to trace the image. Then apply the water color effect from within illustrator.

It really doesn’t matter. If you want the best result, you will always end up needing to trace using the pen tool. Otherwise you will only get an amateurish end result no matter how you slice it.

I use an older 7900GT/256M at home and a GTX285/1G at work. Both runs great using AE CS3.

Yeah, I had very similar issues. See this thread:
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/960399Unfortunately I haven’t got a reply which would’ve solved it. But I found that outputting it at 60fps would definitely improves it. Just change the comp setting to 60fps and render. See if it helps.

Make sure your AE project is in 32bit mode.
Method A:
1. Composition > Save Frame As… > Photoshop Layers
2. Open the file in PS then Save As EXR or HDR format.Method B:
1. Render the frame(s) as usual from directly from AE, and specify either OpenEXR or Radiance sequence from the output module setting -

Actually what you see/experience is correct. If you think about it in the real 3d world… you have a 2 sided poster, with images on both sides. If you slice them up into columns and rotate each individual columns 180 degrees, the “back” image will look like as if each column would positioned in the “wrong” way – even though they are correct.
To accomplish what you want to do correctly, use the Card Wipe transition effect, not Card Dance.
