March 3, 2013 at 8:56 pm in reply to: Getting a “Film Look” with the HVX200A

    Hello again,

I can really use some clarification on the relationship of the 180 degree shutter angle and the shutter speed. I’ve been moving away from shooting 30fps and more towards 24fps. So far all has worked out well but I’m wondering if there’s something I can do to make what I shoot look better?

My current settings are the following:

    SCENE FILE
    Operation Type = Film Cam
    Frame Rate = 24fps
    Syncro is set to 180.0d

    RECORDING SETUP
    Rec FormatP2 = either 1080i/24p or 720P/24PN

*No here’s where my issue lies*

What do I do with the Shutter button? Do I leave it off and on the default of 1/50 since that’s the closest to 1/48 I can seem to find? Or do I turn the shutter on? And if I do turn it on do I just leave it alone where it just comes up as SHUTTER 180.0d?

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Larry

October 14, 2012 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Export Data Rates

Sorry, you’re right. I’m exporting a lot of 30 and 60 minute shows to be aired by numerous television networks who, with the exception of HBO, aren’t very forthcoming with the exporting specs they’d like to have. Each show comes to me @60-70 gbs.

All these shows are shot in 1080. Sometimes I’m having to mix in 720p but I need to output to 1080. The best info I’ve gotten is the following:
    XDCAM HD 422 1080i60 (50mbs), FPS 29.97, 1920×1080

While this is all well and good, I’m wondering now 2 things:
    1. This is still a large file. Are there any adjustments that can be made to make this file smaller initially or, after I export this file, is there another export I can do to make this file even smaller?
    2. Many of the other networks want the codec to be H264 instead of XDCAM.

I’m fine (I think) with all the input options with the exception of the kbps. I’ve tried inputting from 1500-2500 kbps but to my eye it doesn’t look good. I’m thinking that I’ve over-compressed the file.
    Did I?
So basically I’m looking for what the kbps input would be if I wanted to export using H264 and have it look sharp and clean.
I hope this makes what I’m asking more clear.
    Thank you!

  • Hello Matthew,

Thanks for the response. Your question is a good one however I always leave my focus on manual.
I think the only way to truly illustrate my situation is to share the video clip so you or whoever can see for themselves.
I may post a clip and then post that link here.
However in the meantime if you have any other thoughts or suggestions please feel free to get back to me.
    Thanks again!

    Chris,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Curious to know though: when you say you choose 720p or 1080i because of different looks, can you elaborate on that please?

    Thank you!

  • Dave,
It just occurred to me that that actually wasn’t the question: the question is why or what would cause the quality of the playback differ in the canvas than in the viewer? Like I mentioned initially the video I’m referring to, a clip that has a slow, smooth pan, looks fine in the viewer but in the canvas it stutters a bit.
Is there a setting or something I’m missing?

    Thank you!

  • I did not know that – obviously. Thank you, Dave!

  • Thank you, Jeff. I’ll check that out. The darnedest thing is that is just happened again with another video. Until recently I’ve never had any problems with Vimeo and everything I’ve uploaded has been as mp4’s. I don’t think they take anything else.Very frustrating.

    Thank you!
