February 8, 2014 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Shaky Footage: Warp Stablizer Won’t Work for This!I’ve found Mercalli (ProDad) to save my butt on many occasions. I THINK it’s way more powerful than warp. Also, if you change the speed of the clip, then warp won’t work but Mercalli will. There’s a free way to try it out – with a logo on your sample.

February 8, 2014 at 6:58 pm in reply to: Suggestions for plugin effect for animating photos?I do this a lot – and I’ve several plugins, but invariably I use some simple ‘stock’ motions that I created. Choose a photo (preferably a short duration use) and choose the size, location, then move to the end (maybe 4 seconds) and change the size and location. Adjust the ‘ease in’ points then save it as ‘left pan’ or such. Do the same with a ‘push in’ and other moves, saving each one as another effect. They’ll be in your ‘custom bin’ and you can simply drag each one onto any photo in your timeline, then adjust a bit for flavor. This is a quicker way than any plugin I’ve found.

February 8, 2014 at 6:43 pm in reply to: High black and white contrast Post productionThere’s a terrific training video on Cow about b&W conversion. Basically use ‘calculations’ and assign the red and maybe blue channels, even use them ‘multiplied’.

Mucho better, thanks. Still trying to find the compression button (!). The AU Multiband Compressor is a bit daunting…
Thank you!

Michael,
I think you’re onto something. Although I can’t seem to alter the sequence or project (haven’t learned where that is yet), I do see that I can play the clips (from the 5DII) in the viewer with no rendering, but not on the timeline (turns red when I drop them there). I’m looking for the setup controls – even for a new project – and suspect I’ll be able to correct this. At the moment, all I see in AIC in 1920 is 1920x1080i, and I know that it’s progressive, not interlaced.Ah – just tried a complete new project – 1920x1080i (aic), with media converted to that (Streamclip). perfect. Michael – you had the right direction – the wrong settings required constant rendering on the TL. Thank you.
BTW, I used to be a regular on the cow – back when we had computers with springs in ’em. Always found the cow to have super helpful people. I seem to remember one of the posters had been the ‘Indian’ in the Village People – still around?

yeah, I seem to be bumping into these limitations. However, I’m almost capable of doing what I need with iMovie – FCP seems overkill – and pricey. I’ve actually got an older copy but the upgrade cost is as much as a new one. Rendering time is killing me (titles, mostly) but I’m not sure that’s due to the underlying clip. I keep thinking ‘Streamclip’ and size down to 1020×720, see if that gets speedier. Missing my old Media100!

So, I shouldn’t use AIC? There are a number to choose from with Streamclip…Seems there’s an app out there (about $40) that might be more desirable for moving files from the 5DII to FCE?
I’ll be adding a regular video camera to the bag soon, want to keep the same size and format – probably a Sony prosumer…
