If you check out NAB housing you’ll get the best deals – far better than booking direct or through any other site. If you don’t mind staying off strip I recommend the Eastside Cannery – on Boulder Strip next to Sam’s Town – very new place, beautiful Mirage-like rooms at like $39 nite and only 10-15 min. from NAB. Riviera is walking distance to NAB and they have remodeled rooms for $69 night at NAB site.
Monday night has quite a few events – the VASST Sony Vegas User Event is pretty fun – free food and drinks and some pretty good guest speakers. Haven’t heard if it’s on this year. Most of the vendors have get togethers for their clients all over town. Avid PArty used to be pretty god. Autodesk also used to have high-end party on Su. Night but neither has done anything lately.
Tuesday night is a big one. Supermeet always kinda fun, though long. If you can get a ticket, the AJA party the same night is AWESOME! Best party of the show and always at a great venue.
If you’re looking for an insane steak I recommend Del Frisco’s on Paradise Rd. Best beef I’ve ever had and now an NAB tradition for the wife and I. If you haven’t seen KA at MGM Grand it’s a great show – like seeing an epic movie “live”.

I hope you’re right Tim. Last NAB was a little shocking to me with a .5 update at full price. I still haven’t purchased 5.5 and will wait to see how 6 looks – though Adobe also has the very unfriendly tiered upgrading based on the version you have. Not a way to get old users back at all, including me.

I wasn’t talking about MC alone – you get a “suite” of software for $2499 or whatever price you end up paying. Not saying product is better or worse than Adobe, I was just a little peeved last NAB when there really wasn’t much of a break for recent CS5 buyers – not like Apple had done when they released new Studio upgrade – ahhh… those were the days…

I agree the Adobe bundle is a great value. But if you upgraded early from CS5 to 5.5 your upgrade was around 34% of the full price. If you waited the upgrade went to almost 50% of full price. Of course they have a great sale right now so upgrade is around 25% of full price.
If you upgrade right now from Media Composer 5.5 to 6 (a MAJOR update!) the upgrade is about 12% of the full price!

Adobe’s upgrade pricing is easily the most painful in the industry. We’re only 7 weeks from NAB – it would suck to take advantage of the 50% deal and then have to pay again for 6. 5.5 was such a minor upgrade from 5 and should have been done as a free update since really only Premiere Pro and After Effects got minor changes. They added some codecs and stabilizer and charged for FULL upgrade! Apps Of course they added Audition back to the box but it was there originally. Apple didn’t up the price when they added Color to the Studio – they threw it in for free! Apple just added multi cam for free! Adobe would have waited until NAB and charged for it!

The was this car that could tow trucks, haul the kids to soccer practice, hit the drive through then cruise up to wine country. But it’s sitting in a junkyard now, replaced by a hybrid that has just enough battery power to get to the office but you better bring your extension cord. Don’t have one? Don’t worry, I heard rumor they may build one in in a future model. Oh and the driver seat with massage is awesome! For some reason there’s no carpet in the cabin, but the good news is they have super plush shag in the trunk!

Yeah my favorite area on the Apple site was always the FCP Studio pages. Made you feel good knowing legends like Coppola, Murch and Fincher were using the same low cost software on their big budget shows. Sad there’s only a staged Audi spot where all that great testimonial stuff used to be… an Oscar on each side of the logo would have looked cool…
So in theory, Apple should be back at the Oscars around 2021. Thanks, for the memories…

Download the demo and check it out. Just so many many features in a single plug-in. Besides basic color timing and temperature – you’ve got Highlight recovery, Noise Reduction and Sharpening that all produce excellent results, especially for DSLR footage. Top it off with optional legalizer so all your corrections are broadcast safe…
Tonalizer also runs in FCP7.

Took the words out of my mouth. Once BMD bought DaVinci and announced the $999 price, I had no interest in Color, even though I used it a lot and liked it. Now you throw in the free version and the rest is history. Apple knew this and had no prob killing Color. Of course the same reasons didn’t exist with Shake and FCP legacy.

Adobe needed to buy Speedgrade and let’s hope for a cool implementation a la FCP/Color (sob sob). That list Dennis posted looks impressive and I’ve used everything there and I’ll take FCPX Color Board any day. I love that there is no need to actually ad any color plug-in in X – just click on a clip and it’s ready to go.
I’ve been playing with Tonalizer in FCPX quite a bit and it’s my favorite all-time 3rd party plug-in. Really practical and fast with great sharpening and noise reduction built in. No Adobe version yet.
Most Editors I know use 3rd party plugs for color timing within the NLE although Media Composer and FCP legacy both have pretty good built in color tools. The nice thing about using something like Magic Bullet Colorista or Looks is that they have versions for just about every NLE on both Mac and Windows so it’s back to what NLE you like to cut in…
