Well there’s nothing cooler than watching a true Avid pro editing – very little mouse usage at all – they just fly through with keyboard shortcuts etc. That’s not me, I’ve used Avid off and on for years but need my mouse and after so many years with NLE’s like FCP and Vegas I need the Smart Tool for sure.

Smart tool is great and I’d be 10% Avid right now if it wasn’t for the limited audio tracks. Just can’t understand why Avid has never improved this? Since I do a lot of animation and sound design as I cut I need more than 16 tracks or 8 stereo pairs – bums me out. No I don’t want to work with mix downs…

I agree Tim – love the BMD catalog for sure – but it is heavy. Since I drive out every year I usually do my Monday morning round up in the publications area of the upper South Hall and get all the mags in one tote bag and put them in the car right away. It’s a heavy bag but you can grab at least $100 worth of mags for free to read later. A lot of vendors give out free tote bags, some nice than others, try to grab one with a wide, soft strap and not the string kind, then be very selective with the brochures etc. Many booths have CD or DVD with pdf’s – easy to carry. Most vendors don’t have a lot of printed stuff like the old days.
Please don’t be one of the dorks that grab every single piece of info and stick it in your rolling suitcase – just embarrassing and gets in everyones way. Sadly these guys are everywhere and usually stop sideways in the busiest aisles – welcome to NAB!

Disagree. They are all over-priced compared to pretty much anything else out there. If you break it down to cost per USEABLE effect they’re outrageous. Look at the new Light Blends for example – most of the effects look like bad Video Toaster fx from the 90’s I mean Psycho Strobe? RGB Shift? Seriously? You want me to pay for this?
The big problem with most of the NewBlue stuff is there is maybe one or two effects per package that are useable in a professional production. Instead of adding more good, useable effects to their existing packages to keep them exciting and relevant, they just keep releasing more useless bundles and keep raising prices. This the opposite of what companies like Red Giant and GenArts do. Embarrassing…

Exactly – I have many of them and they used to be simple, reliable and effective. Now we have to pay extra for GPU versions? Not happening.

Post Production folks aren’t the only ones needing a fast workstation. Think of all the graphic designers, photographers etc everywhere. If Apple really believes we’re in a postPC world and fails to create viable workstations they’re gonna force us all to switch to other brands and OS’s. If you’re editing world was suddenly Windows 8 you’d want a Windows phone, then a Windows pad etc. etc. This is how Apple has grown over the last decade, would be interesting to see it happen in reverse…

If you play Tim Cook’s keynote forward you hear him say “postPC” wayyyy too many times! Got me really scared thinking why would a company tout the term over and over and show that 76% of revenues was from “postPC” devices ever come out with more PCs? Let alone innovate really powerful ones like all us Editor’s need and are hoping for?
