I stand by my observation that Macs are disappearing from the Apple retail stores and they’ve become a device-centric company. They could stop making Pro apps and Mac Pro’s tomorrow and probably be a more efficient company. My guess is that day is coming… eventually.
And thanks for the lessons about online ordering and BTO… who knew?

I’ve bought a maxed out iMac at the Apple store and in the tower days and fairly substantial Mac Pro. The fact is there were more Macs of all sorts on display the last time I was in the store and now hardly any – not just pro versions. Yes I bought my last trash can Mac Pro via Apple online. I get it, Apple is making billions and billions on devices, wherever they may be sold but the lack of attention and updates to pro apps and hardware is a tad scary.
Another clue to me is the new Disk Utility – which is now a dumbed down consumer utility with no more RAID features etc. You can’t even re-size the window anymore.

My long term fears isn’t about FCPX updates as much as it is about its existence! I visited an Apple store Sunday for the first time in a while and was saddened that there a lone Mac Pro and a coulee of iMacs against a wall and the rest of the store was all devices. There used to be a table full of iMac’s and various tables with laptops but no more.
With everyone wanting to shoot 4K, 6K and beyond, will there even be a Apple system that can handle the material in the near future? The only thing keeping mainly Mac-based is Pro Res, otherwise I’d probably be 100% Windows and Premiere or Resolve…

The bummer I discovered after selling my trash can Mac is that Color Finale does not support tower Mac Pro’s with aftermarket GPU’s like the GTX 980 I have in mine and do not intend to. Sad as I liked working with it a lot.

I agree with audio in FCPX vs Premiere. The other issue for me was hardware. I use a simple Focusrite i/o for 5.1 monitoring. On the device C/L/R/Rs/Ls are labeled so easy to attach monitors. Launch FCPX and voila! All the speakers are assigned perfectly! No muss, no fuss.
Not so with Premiere. In fact I gave up trying to assign correct 5.1 configuration inside audio preferences. Not even Adobe folks at NAB could help and at the time there were no instructions, tutorials or YouTube videos to help.

We were able to do this with a new Mac Pro easily. Maybe the top-of-the-line iMac would have handled it as the raid array was a huge factor in driving the files at real-time but I didn’t have one to test. The issue with an iMac is the GPU – so much processing is handed off to the GPU these days in most of the NLE’s so having the dual D700’s with 6GB memory each in the Mac Pro really helped especially when it came to color timing. This is what makes PC’s so attractive right now with the new GTX 1080 and a free version of Resolve there may be no need for a new Mac Pro.

I’m using “pro” LG’s now and one died recently, something I’ve never had happen to a monitor before. I just hope I can plug a new Dell into my Mac and continue using FCPX…? I get the gut feeling that Apple will soon eol Mac Pro’s thus ending the support and interest in anything “pro” including FCPX… I hope I’m wrong.

I would go for the 850C or higher – they have Triluminos, X-1 and support Rec709, Rec.2020 and DCP plus HDR
