I concur. I use Illustrator every time and have for 15 years. I just ask for a left justified text file from the producers and paste that into Illustrator. The first step is to set up 2 tabs for your centerline and then format using fonts of choice. Even plopping in things like the Red logo, SAG logo etc is super easy. Then I just kick out a .png if going to FCPX or Premiere or import the file into AE like you said – set 2 keyframes and done.

The only issue I have is if whoever does the credit list decides to “help” out by trying to format in Word or whatever. Bad move and all the formatting has to be stripped out before I align everything.

  • It’s not about fighting or pushing back – all the requests are common sense and real. For instance, just this morning I’m attempting to import a FCP 7 job into X. Used 7toX and about 10 to 15% of the files are offline because FCPX doesn’t like them – even from a media managed folder and I have no way to override and say please use them anyway – so there’s red checkered throughout the timeline with nothing to do but cut them in manually from scratch. Is that user error? Am I pushing back against something I don’t understand?

The idea that FCPX and Apple are perfect and if you don’t like X you’re a stubborn moron is just idiotic.

Yeah I’m still waiting for the export Pro Res function… I think Assimilate Scratch has Pro Res export on Windows?

Yeah I’d wanted the Sonnet but it’s double the price but maybe worth it if the performance is better?

Well your son’s machine is close to $7 grand plus storage. The big bummer using an older Mac Pro, even if it’s updated with SSD’s, fast GPU, 12 cores etc. is it still has so many bottlenecks compared to the nMP. PCIe 2.0 slots, 1333 RAM, antique architecture etc etc. But, you can get NEAR nMP performance with the right upgrades, all it takes is plenty of cash…

I have a 4 drive RAID 0 inside my old Mac Pro using WD Black drives with SSD’s in optical bay. I get approx 500MB read/write via AJA System test and I use Softraid. SSD performance limited to 300MB per sec due to older SATA in the MOBO.

Big issue is GPU – seems if you’re more Premiere than nVidia is the way to go while AMD is best for FCPX.

Gotcha – I also had the 7950 – the upgrade to the GTX 980 is significant and gives you near the performance of the dual D700’s in the nMP and works well with 4K material.

    Good Luck!

My last feature was all native 4K .r3d’s and I cut it with no issues on a nMP 6-core with D700’s and a fast Thunderbolt raid. I think the raid was a very important part of the real-time performance. I’ve since gone back to an older Mac Pro with the GTX 980 in it and it’s fine with Red footage. Why not just update your 12-core? What GPU do you have? I’ve got a 4 drive raid inside and SSD boot drive with 2nd SSD for cache and all is pretty nice but I do miss Thunderbolt…

July 21, 2016 at 7:41 am in reply to: Looking for new UI monitor

I too like the idea of going with one widescreen curved monitor and plan to when I can BUT don’t know if LG will be on my shopping list. I have 2 of the high-end ($1,000 each) 27″ LG’s and one died recently, right as the warranty expired. I’ve never had a monitor backlight just whack out before, I’ve had monitors look tired after a few years but never just fail. So I’ll be looking at Samsung, Dell, HP whatever and buying an extended warranty next time.
