If your just using a single drive than 7200 is going to be important. I opted for the G DRIVE because the newer model has USB 3 which is still overkill for a single drive. You don’t really get any benefit using Thunderbolt unless you’re attaching RAID storage that can take advantage of the huge bandwidth.

I’ve had no sluggishness yet working on a doc. I’m using comps exactly like sequences so when we change a cut I dupe the comp and keep cutting. It’s easy to then delete the old cuts if we know we’re not going back. I rarely used nested sequences in FCP 7 or other NLE’s and I’m not using comps in other comps in FCPX. I still like to copy/paste my edits into master comp cuts so I always see all my clips. Guess that comes from over a decade of being spoiled with Sony Vegas and never getting bogged down with massive 90 min 60+ track projects. Even when Vegas added nesting I still never used it – just me I guess, my brain needs to see every bit of picture and sound.
I still say the John Davidson method is the best, this could change as FCPX evolves…

There is another much easier and cleaner way to work – you first need to watch John Davidson’s FCPX videos, especially #2 Importing. You’ll see that using Comps (compound clips) as multiple timelines works fantastic. This is the only way I work anymore and I also cut features.
Watch these videos! Everything you know about FCPX will change – for me an 18k HMI went off in my brain and I finally realized why Apple created FCPX and why we don’t have FCP7 anymore…

It does work with “Synchronized Clip”

Not sure if you tried it but instead of making a compound clip, select your picture and stems and make a Synchronized Clip instead. I just did this to cut a trailer and it’s working okay – still have to manually turn of dialog or you can remove the dialog from the synched clip and just cut the dialog free version into the timeline as needed.
Probably a better way, hopefully someone will chime in as I’d like to have the stems show up in the info window like you do without creating a full render of the show.

Hey Mark,
Obviously shared storage is a huge concern for your facility and it seems that folks are finding success in multi-user set-ups. The real benefit I see using FCPX in a studio like yours where shows are almost always multi-cam and run ‘n gun with long takes is how projects can be organized. Now that I’m starting to really understand FCPX and how it works with OSX including iTunes etc (thanks in a BIG way to John Davidson’s tutorials!) it can totally speed up work flow for your Editors and Post Dept. Keyword and Smart Collections just blow away old-fashioned Marker/sub-clip workflow and make finding clips, soundbites etc. much more intuitive and best of all FUN! Creating multi-cam clips and then naming and finding all the selects is a breeze and the A-list Director and Producer I’ve shown this on a recent Doc were just blown away – and these guys are Avid diehards since the early 90’s.
Suffice to say FCPX is not the same beast that was forced out after NAB ’11 – it’s come a long way and if you take the time to really dig in it’s very “pro” and very fun to use.

Yeah my first and wouldn’t buy one based one reviews of older models. 5D is brand new model – install was a breeze, Drobo software is very clean super easy to use – set-up was automatic and took just a few minutes to format and configure 5 3TB drives. I like their safety features better than usual Raid 5 or 6 plus you can even install various sized drives if you have a bunch laying around.
I’ll get my 64GB Crucial mSATA drive (the Drobo recommended size/model) later this week and will see if there are any performance increases. Keeping my fingers crossed…

well over 200 MB sec. writes, 300MB sec. reads – but it also has mSATA port – Crucial 64GB is on order which should, in theory, increase performance and turn it into a giant “fusion” drive. 15TB via 5 3TB drives gives 11 TB useable with huge, proprietary protection – different than Raid 5 or 6.
