they need to contact Blackmagic to see if it works with the Blackmagic USB 3 products that they have. But will they do this – NOOOOOOOOOOOO….. (and if they do, boy will I be the first one to say that I am wrong).

I dont’ care about USB3 drives on a Mac Pro – what I do care about is compatibility with the tons of USB 3 hardware that Blackmagic has.

Issue is that the BMD USB3 products work with very few Mac NLEs:

Adobe Premiere Pro on Mac is shown…but Avid on PC is indicated…not Avid on Mac. FCX? Lots of Macs now have USB 3 ports (MacBook Pros, iMacs), but I guess since they also have Thunderbolt, that is the choice to go with.

I just picked up the new Drobo 5D case which has both Thunderbolt and USB 3 ports. Easy way to add fast storage to Mac Pro with this card… hey and the Drobo 5D actually ships beefy Thunderbolt and USB 3 cables in the box!

What speeds are you getting with it?

well over 200 MB sec. writes, 300MB sec. reads – but it also has mSATA port – Crucial 64GB is on order which should, in theory, increase performance and turn it into a giant “fusion” drive. 15TB via 5 3TB drives gives 11 TB useable with huge, proprietary protection – different than Raid 5 or 6.

Is this your first Drobo Lance? It seems like people either love them or hate them.

Yeah my first and wouldn’t buy one based one reviews of older models. 5D is brand new model – install was a breeze, Drobo software is very clean super easy to use – set-up was automatic and took just a few minutes to format and configure 5 3TB drives. I like their safety features better than usual Raid 5 or 6 plus you can even install various sized drives if you have a bunch laying around.

I’ll get my 64GB Crucial mSATA drive (the Drobo recommended size/model) later this week and will see if there are any performance increases. Keeping my fingers crossed…

I’ve been enticed by Drobo but always read enough negative reviews not to take the plunge. Maybe the new units will change my mind.
