I prefer to convert my DSLR footage using 5DtoRGB Batch and convert to ProRes HQ or 444 – it’s a great tool and really makes a difference when it comes time to do some color work.

I don’t see much benefit of going from 8 to 10. I’d wait until you upgrade your hardware and then make the move to the latest version – 13 showing next week at NAB!

I love NAB – I too am a total tech geek and there’s no other show like NAB where literally every phase of our business from prep to transmitting is there. If you just show up for the tradeshow plan on at least 2 days. Monday and Tues. are packed – Wed better and still lots of seminars etc in the various booths. Thurs great day with thin crowds but the floor closes at 2 so be quick! Wed/Thurs also cheaper at many of the hotels.

I agree with Bob – the South Lower is the place to be and where I’ll be working on Mon and Tues in the AJA booth 🙂 I make most of my living in post and if you’re the same South Lower is the place to be.
But the Central Hall is where my heart is because I actually like shooting much more than cutting. The Central Hall is where you’re gonna see (usually in very cool, 4K screening rooms) all the various types of footage you’ll soon be posting from all the big names like Sony (massive booth), Panasonic, Canon, ARRI etc. plus there’s a ton of little guys with crazy cool gadgets and solutions. Red is the only major camera company who isn’t in Central – they have a substantial presence in South Lower.
If you do any type of post sound work you’ll also want to check out Central as most of the sound related companies are there and NOT in South.

There are many solutions for recording 4K including the company I’m working for at NAB – AJA. Knowing that the GH4 actually sends 10 bit 4K out via the HDMI, I expect to see a lot of new gear at NAB…
If I was to actually shoot with the GH4 I would want to test the 200Mbit 1080p vs. the 100Mbit 4K – which in camera is a lowly 25Mbit per 1080 quadrant. Which means the 1080p recording has 8 times the data of the 4K internal!
For the most part there is no current reason to master/deliver in 4K unless you have a theatrical run and a 4K delivery requirement. This will change obviously in the future when there are more 4K outlets…

Colorista is great – use it all the time – but my new fav by far is Film Convert – much more filmic than any other plug-in and great color wheels etc. Super fast to get a great look.

I’ve been cutting off and on for quite a while now on a Doc that is mostly 4K Red with a smattering of 5K and a lot of DSLR 1080 and uprezzed news and archive footage. We’ve been transcoding all the 4K to 2K ProRes 444 1:85 masters and cutting those. All 1080 footage is being scaled to match 2K timeline – not ideal but it’s working. I use 5DtoRGB to batch all DSLR and XDCAM footage to ProRes 444 and HQ depending of the situation – it’s a great tool for DSLR shooters.
I plan on shooting my next feature in 4K – possibly even the new GH4 but will have a better idea after NAB next week. I do believe 4K will be the theme at NAB this year and thankfully NOT 3D! Can’t wait!

I’m basically saying any show of 1/2 hour or longer with a fairly complex timeline. My last 2 national TV shows had a ton of compositing, flares etc with layer modes, multi-layered graphics and lower 3rds etc. plus a ton of color fx etc. I cut both in Premiere CC with no issues.
I do all my own sound design when I cut, regardless of the show type, so ease of audio editing/mixing etc is important to me. The way I cut with sound, Sony Vegas has been, by far, the best NLE for those who like working with sound and picture. FCPX is pretty cool with audio, much better than Premiere or Avid, but it can get frustrating at times when I’m build a scene with a dozen or more laters of sound fx and music…

Same here – I’ve made good money off of just about every NLE out there since the late 90’s including Avid, Sony Vegas (my all-time fav) FCP, Premiere and even a little Edius and Avid DS and yes even FCPX.
I do tend to lean towards Aindreas camp when it comes to X, for all the uber cool features and hidden pluses, the main weakness is actually the timeline and EDITING! I think the only way for veteran Editors like myself to really learn to like FCPX is to do a major gig with it and plow through regardless of how you feel about – just pretend it’s the only LE available and finish the show. By major I mean something like a TV show, high end doc or feature film – something fairly long with a busy timeline and just see how it goes. This is my plan with my next feature film – don’t know if I’ll make it but will try…
