Our show is being delvered at 1280×720 24 fps targas. I batch convert the targas into clips via AE at 23.976. We are currently using Cineform NEO 2K codec which creates a pristine clip that is a fraction of the size of UNC. We have also tested ProRES HQ and like it. We cannot keep the shows in frames or uncompressed clips because of the systems demands – raids, starage capacity, SAN, lack of fiber etc.
I was just looking for a solution to create the QT’s on the Mac so we can use the Pro RES HQ codec and finish in FCP/Color. Both AE 6.5 and Quicktime Pro lose the last frame of every clip when I convert from frames. This is not a problem on the PC using AE 7.

Thanks Gary – Gluetools looks great but seems more suited for DPX work like DI’s etc. Doesn’t say anything about targas or image sequences en masse.
Looking of the right tool to batch convert a lot of image sequences into ProRES clips.

Are you using a SAN software solution? You could ad MetaLan to each iMac and MetaLan server to your G5- you would probably have better performance and not experience file not found errors. Not that it is perfect but we use it on a 5 workstation set up.

FCP doesn’t support image sequences like other NLE’s – you must set your still image length to 1 frame and import the images that way This is fine for a seq here or there – but I’m talking dozens of targa seq. delivered all at once. (we are doing a CG series) Vegas, Premiere Pro, Avid all work fine on the PC, but we want to finish epsodes in FCP!
I am uisng After Effects to batch them into QT’s. AE7 on the PC works fine – I only have AE 6.5 on OSX and it loses the last frame on every shot as does QT Pro! Compressor doesn’t do image sequences either (only export). Anyone tried AE7 for this on the Mac?

You can also render PhotoJPEG QT’s at 100% quality and read them in Vegas. You will need fast hard drives as Vegas doesn’t like QT’s too much. Once in Vegas you may want to convert the files into a Vegas friendly codec like the Sony YUV or XDCAM HD codec.

I agree that a Kona or some true video card is the better choice (we have the KHe at work and I have the Kona 3 at home) – but I just set up a new 32″ 1080p LCD yesterday in my bay at work using DVI to HDMI as a temp solution and got it pretty dialed in using the monitor callibration set-up in OSX and live bars via FCP.
I’m viewing 1080p ProRERS HQ stuff and it looks insane. I’m not timing Michael Bay’s next movie with this set up but it is possible get a decent image.
We also have 3 Sony Vegas bays using a 50″ consumer plasma, 42″ pro plasma and a 32″LCD all via DVI to DVI or HDMI and they are all calibrated. Vegas has better color management out than FCP, but my FCP rig looks pretty good.
We are using these on a extremely high profile upcoming TV series and have had no issues with QC during our laybacks in Hollywood.

Think you may be asking too much here – ProRES is an Apple codec – we’ll see if they make it available for PC editing.
Haven’t you tried the Cineform stuff? NEO blows away ProRES in every test we’ve done (not that ProRES is bad at all!)
I’m not a fan of the Prospect stuff for PPro, but the new NEO stuff is awesome!

Sometimes the drives cycle through and viola! The raid mounts – other times no dice – cycles properly and nothing! Seems a tad better on the Mac. I’ve been dealing with this for months Bob – it’s not a patience thing.
The ramp up I’m talking about is when editing – they raids take a bit to get up to full framerate playback – not a lot but there is a noticeable delay.
YES! I would prefer a 4GB fibre array!
We did have the Sonnet’s on our MetaSan system as off-line network drives – not enough horsepower for more than one user. We are now using them as local drives for ProRES HD finishing on our current series.
We moved our off-line networked projects to a large Isilon system – very expensive but it works!

Sorry – didn’t know they stopped supporting Pro Tools – we moved to Nuendo a while back and haven’t used PT on the network.
