I would stick with Compressor – if Streamclip causes even a 10% loss as Richard stated why use it? Just encode a clip each way and see for yourself if the difference matters. I personally didn’t like the results with Streamclip so I don’t use it – I run everything through Compressor to Pro RES HQ.
As far as audio goes I cut the same way – cutting in clean audio as I finish sequences – it’s a pain either way but why sync takes I’ll never use.
You can always transcode to ProRES 444 for final master if you feel you are losing something with HQ, but I think HQ holds up pretty well.

You’ll probably have more fun shooting with the 18 than the 28 on the wide end due to the 7D’s crop factor but I haven’t used either of these lenses. Either one should be fine as a starter walk-around lens but eventually you’ll wanna step up to the L series lenses which are significantly better and more expensive.

My favorite lens is the 70-200 2.8L IS USM but it’s not cheap.
I’d pick up the 7D kit w/lens and then rent a few different lenses from lensrentals.com and play around/test. They are great to work with and reasonable. Then you can make your decision based on your own experience/needs/budget etc.

I’d go 7D for now unless you have the money for the 1D – but you can buy a 7D and two nice L series lenses for the 1D body price.

Do you have a custom setting you are using? If not I would go into the settings and turn detail and contrast way down – some filmmakers even turn them all the way down. Also set your shutter to 1/60th if you are shooting 30p with 5D. There are noise issues with DSLRs in some shooting situations that will have to be fixed in post but most can be avoided with careful attention to set design and proper wardrobe choices.

February 11, 2010 at 11:48 pm in reply to: HDSLR’s Inferior HDMI and Recording CodecThanks for the detailed reply Robbie! I believe it’s silly to write off the DSLR’s because you believe the codec is inferior. Could it better – absolutely! But if shot with care the footage is stunning and if posted correctly should please any broadcaster or distributor.
We just shot over 40 hours of 7D footage for our latest feature and 98% is great while there is some noise or moire in the other 2% which we can easily fix in post if need be.

Why the lower rez output thru plasma? Did you try setting up as 1080p output? Also you may want to burn a DVD or Bluray and view that on separate system.

Some pretty decent demo footage shot with the t2i – Canon’s gonna sell a lot of these for under $800!

Yeah that’s seems like a killer deal – with 1080 24p! Wait until Costco gets some dual lens kits in for under a grand. Will be interesting to see the quality.

Thanks Tomi – sadly I don’t have a right solution – it’s gonna take some testing based on the footage – Compressor may be all that is needed but better results can probably be had using Twixtor – I’d have to see the footage for myself and run it though all the tests.
Our solution, which doesn’t help here at all, was to not use the 5D and go with the 7D which shoots 23.976 natively – we’re happy with the results but we would rather have found a suitable way to post the 5D full-frame footage and use it – but we were never happy with any tests we did.
In Parker’s case he MUST find a remedy and all I suggest is try everything you can until you’re happy with the end result – not great help I know.
