August 8, 2011 at 5:08 pm in reply to: ATTO R680 + SOHOTANK ST8-U5 + Seagate ST33000651AS = ISSUES!Hey Christian,
It could be a combination of things: Could be the chassis. Is it a 6 GB/s chassis? Does the chassis have an expander? How long are the cables? As far as I can tell by the part number of the drive, that is a desktop level drive, meaning they aren’t really meant to be built into a RAID, not saying it can’t but Ultrastar level drives are what are recommended for RAID use. In our office we only use Hitachi as of right now they have the least failure rate and provide good speed as well.
You might also want to check under your ATTO Config Tool, look under your localhost tab and highlight Channel 1 under your ExpressSAS R680. Then select NVRAM at the top. What are your Device Wait Time and Device Wait Count set at?

If it’s eSATA you’re kind of stuck. But I agree with Alex. Get an R680 card as it is backwards compatible with 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s drives and has a tool built in the ATTO Configuration Tool to migrate more drives into your already created RAID set! You are going to need to get a MiniSAS Expander Chassis to achieve this though, but you will get tremendous speed and be supported by one of the best RAID controller card manufacturers around!
Let me know if I can be of any more help.
Cheers and good luck with all of your projects!

Hey Jack,
Hope you’re search is going well for the RAID system that you want to implement.
I saw that the reputable sources that you mentioned for purchasing a RAID was Maxx Digital, which I happen to work for. It sounds like you don’t want to do shared storage and just want direct attached storage for speed and reliability. Although I will agree on one thing that Matt mentioned, and that’s support. I’m head of tech support here at Maxx and am available 24/7 for any assistance you might need. I can also get you setup with Bob Zelin who’s a leader on this forum and do a presales call to make sure that what you think you need is actually what you’ll need. Contact me privately here @ kyle@maxxdigital.com and would definitely be interested in showing you our products and getting you set up with one of our Evo series RAIDs.
Good luck with your project(s).

Hey Barry,
Contact me privately at kylehb56@yahoo.com and I can without a doubt get you pointed in the right direction. Running a single volume on two separate systems at the same is definitely possible but doesn’t quite work the way you would expect. Be great to speak with you.Cheers
