December 10, 2010 at 7:12 am in reply to: Is it normal to have 10 frames of latency on the monitoring output ?the delay is a by product of whats going on in the background. because the video is being processed and “rendered” in real time, a bit of a wait is to be expected…one of the nice things about color is there is no delay between the display and the monitor but then you have to render out later. thats why you also have audio sync problems…you have to pass the audio through a delay to get the pic in sync with the sound….again in color there is no sound so you can listen to your celine dion tracks all day while grading away in peace!

December 10, 2010 at 6:50 am in reply to: Resolve for Mac feedback from former Apple Color users?agree with your comments on the wave…i had been sitting on the fence for months and finally got to see and feel one for myself..(i think theres only 3 in the whole country)…i cant understand why they didnt angle it up from the bottom to the top…and it is quite high so your arms are always floating above the thing…after a few hours i could see that this was not for me. i think the jl cooper eclipse series is better laid out. i prefer the rings around the balls. also glad to know that i’m not the only one who is dying from this job. my back is also shot after too many long days in the chair. i now try and take regular breaks and even try and get to the pool in the afternoon just to loosen things up.

hey christoper..i’m in south africa…..we pay very high import tariffs and taxes on imported goods. i got a brand new 8 core mac last month that you could buy in the states for around $2500 and i ended up paying almost $4000…i got a quote for a tangent panel from a local supplier and it would have coast me around 25,000 rands which at the time was around $3300. that $995 piece of software is also around $1400.hell a $300 iphone costs us nearly $700 with a contract!!!..and dont forget that in this country salaries are almost half of anywhere else, not to mention budgets that are about 1/4 of the equivalent american rates…so there you go…we have half as much money and have to pay sometime more than double for our toys….hope you can see why i’m gonna be sticking with my setup for awhile longer!

love the guitar analogy…same for any instrument… and i love the response. i would love to know what hardware you are using with resolve…in another forum i mention that comparing a full blown resolve on a linux machine is not a fair match for a mac…..i also cant justify even the panels right now, let alone the extra graphics card…a tangent wave costs over $4000 down here and most of us are just scraping by in these tough times so me on my mac with my kensington blade and wacom is about as state of the art as i can manage right now!
if i worked for a post house with some financial grunt i would love to put in a resolve suite with trackball controller and a huge monitor and free wireless internet and cappuccino….oh and some comfy chairs…my ass is killing me! -

November 24, 2010 at 9:44 pm in reply to: Resolve for Mac feedback from former Apple Color users?thanks for posting this…it is exactly the info i’m looking for. i am always being labelled as anti davinci and its just not true. i would use a cows ear to grade if it did the job well! i am only pointing out that color is a valid tool for alot of people who either dont have the resources or the need to switch to something else…

actually i’m trying to convince myself that resolve is worthwhile….i started out this entry stating that i was looking for well informed unbiased opinion on the resolve with the intention of maybe even switching from color if i could find reason to do so…instead i mostly got arrogant responses from people who only wanted to trash color….when i put up valid comparisons, i got no response as if i was hitting on some truths, especially in regards to rendering (check out my post called when is rendering not rendering)…i have yet to find a real reason to switch to a system that basically does only 90% of the type of work i do….for eg:
on a mac, you still have to render or playout if you ‘re gonna give the material to your client for online. also the roundtripping between color and fcp is very smooth for most of my needs and makes it very easy to grab a drive from a client, open the project, grade it and hand it back, ready for online. also i object to people who won a full blown davinci resolve and compare that to color on a mac. if you compare resolve on a mac with no panels to color on a mac with no panels the davinci doesnt look like such a bargain. again i’ll state that as soon as someone can convince me that for my money in my market in the country where i work that the resolve will bring me more work or somehow speed up my workflow then i’ll stick with color. your arrogance is just one more reason that keeps me away from davinci…if the product is so good it should sell itself based on its capabilities. both systems have their good and bad points and i’m always the first one to bitch about color when it doesnt do what i would like, but you can be sure until resolve gets the bugs out and offers a better way to do things, i’ll keep my color! now shoot me down, go ahead! give me 10 good reasons why davinci on a mac is better than color! your turn, i can take it! maybe you’ll just convince me to switch! -

i forgot to mention that you can indeed alter the secondary color correction inside a vignette in the secondaries…..when you select a color it looks like the whole color is being affected in the preview window but in actual fact its just the area inside or outside of the mask and you can use “user shapes” which i find quite useful!
-
actually you can easily modify color inside a vignette…just use the color efx room. insert a secondary node into the vignette and voila! glad you find the davinci a work in progress….thats all i’m saying for now.
