day 2 of davinci lite……first i have to admit that i finally like this….sort of! having the lite version to play with is great as i can figure out how to run the thing before i actually pull out the credit card. only 2 little snags that i have found……first i would like to know if there is a keyboard command for toggling on and off the grade like in color….i always liked the way i could quickly see a “before and after” grade. i mapped a button on my wacom to do this in color and is such a quick and handy way to see what the original shot looked like before the grade. the second thing i miss is the ability to drag a grade from one shot and apply it to another similar shot. i’m sure there is a way but i just havent discovered it yet. the new “3 way control” makes it a lot more color like and i found that within minutes i could actually be grading….the project loading could be a little more friendly…..i really miss the send to command where color would just open the project and away you go directly from fcp. takes a bit more time to export the xml and direct the programme to where the media is but i think its just one of those things i will have to get used to. the curves a re now very color like as well and was a welcome surprise to me..now i just gotta get my head around this silly node structure…the one other thing i use alot in color is having individual project folders always available. often when i’m working on a series i will create a folder for grades that i can always access from any other project. for instance i have saved a lot of settings in episode 1 that i find i need in episode 2 (opening sequence lets say) in color i could open a new project for the 2nd show and still be able to open the grades folder from episode 1 in order to quickly drag and drop the grades to the new project. i also like being able to quickly go to list view and sort the shots in source order and just apply one setting to a bunch of similar shots. can davinci switch the time line to source mode rather than shot order? it would make it very quick and easy to copy grades to a group of shots with out having to actually go through everything and make groups…..
one more crappy thing for me….i now have to buy a new monitor because my samsung doesnt go up to 1920 and davinci doesnt like to run on lower resolutions…color doesnt either but i did manage to coax it into working in 1600 x 900…damn!

finally a voice of reason…it’s like buying a new car because the old model is discontinued when the old one is actually perfectly fine…..i think it’s just a knee jerk reaction by some divas who can’t cope with change. i know of people who are still using old avid systems with software from 3 years ago. so whats the big deal with sticking with fcp if it works. only jump to fcpx if it works for you, otherwise stick with what you have…i have even heard of some people wanting to abandon apple all together and switch to avid or premier on a pc just to spite apple….sounds like a big waste of time and money to me! the old version of fcp is a very mature programme and is still usable…if apple had introduced fcpx as imovie pro no one would have blinked and eye. we’d only be hearing praises form editors moving from imovie and none of this silly backlash would have happened…

  • nice to see them making it more like color…makes you wonder if color isnt so bad then? i remember posting something awhile back about people missing the “3 way control” or vector display in davinci and everyone with a panel said it didnt really make a difference but now it’s great to see this implemented in resolve…makes it more like color to control!

  • if this is true then i’m going to order resolve today. it was the only feature i would have missed from color that made it easy to use without a panel…except for the eyedropper color selector which would also be great. now if tangent will just get the wave lite app for ipad working with resolve i would be in heaven! funny how much more like color davinci is becoming…makes me wonder about all those people who used to say color wasn’t good enough! imitation is the sincerest for of flattery!

same here…..i’m actually hoping that with xml reintroduced i might even be able to still use color…export xml from fcpx …import into color? who knows its all rather exciting i think…..but davinci is my back up plan if i have to!

so nice to hear someone with a fresh and open take on the whole thing….as you say you are not a “pro” and you’ve probably noticed that most of the negative stuff comes form the old timers, but i love your open and honest feelings on the subject. i’ve been getting crapped on by everyone everytime i tell people to adapt or die. you comments sum up the experience beautifully and if anyone doesnt agree with you then just forge ahead…steal their clients and make your own way into this crazy world of post production. maybe then they will open their eyes and shut their mouths! best of luck to you…

sorry if i appear so outspoken but i just get so tired of all this doom and gloom…apple tried to make a product that would make the job of editting easier for more people. i have said many times that it might not be exactly what the “pros” would like but if people don’t like it then don’t buy it…move on and stop all this complaining and whining….there is too much negative energy going around here. we either can embrace the new way or stick to our tried and trusted ways or give up…those are the 3 options and there really isnt any other choice. if you dont like what apple has done to fcp then jump ship to avid or pp…thats what everyone did years ago when they all became fed up with avid and embraced fcp. back then fcp wasnt even close to fcpx now yet no one complained about it…they all jumped on board and years later it became and industry standard…i can remember when you had to be an engineer to edit on old 2 inch machines that cost 100’s of thousands of dollars…and that was only ntsc resolution, now we have a tool that brings a whole edit suite in the palm of your hand in glorious hd quality…i would say that this is somewhat magical and really should be praised for what it is and not criticized for what it isnt! so lets all stop complaining and get back to doing what we do best with whatever tools we should decide to use….i think i’ll go back to color correcting using and old box of crayons!

timothy, i never said i wanted anyone to agree with me….my viewpoint is just that..MINE…..i merely suggest if you have nothing better to do than bitch then maybe you should consider leaving the industry…i mean who wants to work in a job that makes them miserable…maybe the ones bitching have reached their sell by date and should really look at alternatives….i speak from my own experience because i was miserable in my job the last few years. i desperately wanted the company to move in another direction and embrace the new digital world. i thought that a dedicated film scanner with a state of the art grading system was the way of the future for film transfer and a new way to approach post production. when the company i worked for bough a brand new spirit datacine with and old davince that wouldnt even do HD, i threw my hands up in disbelief and walked out the door…..guess what, today that company is kicking its ass that it didnt listen to me…if you look around when was the last time anyone bought a new telecine. that’s old school and if you dont believe me, call up rank cintel and ask them when last they sold a telecine …i’ll say it again…it’s all about evolving…a new way of looking at things…there is no room for the old farts that are set in their ways..they are the dinosaurs of the post industry…period! i can say this because i am an old fart but i can at least adapt!
