  • P.S…

I ask this import video track question because I have been told that through the CMX 3600 EDL, that I can only import a total of 2 video tracks.

  • Thanks very much Jim. You have been a great help.

I will check the manual, and I also also bought a couple of books on
FCP, including the Final Cut Pro 4 Bible (the “FCP 5 Bible” doesn’t seem to be out yet.

Again, I appreciate all of your thoughtful feedback.

  • Hi Jerry…

One more question that I hope you can answer:

When FCP looks for 2 video tracks, does the EDL consider the “Video 1A” and “Video 1B” tracks as two seperate tracks, or… does the EDL that is going to be imported into FCP consider “Video 1” and “Video 2” as the two distinct tracks.

In Premiere 6.5, the Video “1A” and “1B” are handled as seperate tracks, with different video being able to be placed in each of those layers of the “Track 1”.

I am trying to understand whether I can keep my two separate tracks on the “Video 1A” and “Video 1B” tracks, or whether it is best to keep video ONLY on “Video 1A” and “video 2”

Thank you again for your help,

  • Thanks for the great information, Jim.

You mentioned that if I combine the two different tapes (minidv and BetaSP), that I will not be able to monitor one of those types of footage through the Kona output, however… If I capture the BetaSP footage with the “8 bit to DV” setting, won’t the BetaSP also be “translated” into DV codec to match the codec of the miniDV?

So, in fact, I can capture the miniDV as “NTSC DV,” and translate the BetaSP during capture also as “NTSC DV” codec. Am I makin the righ assumption?

Also, during batch capture, can I choose which reels to capture so that I can seperately capture the miniDV and BetaSP in two different groups? Or, does FCP ask for the tapes in the order that they appear in the EDL sequence, or by reel number?

Thanks again for sharing your experience and feedback.

  • Thank you very very much for your help, Jim.

Yes, I might as well stay with the DV codec since over 75% of my footage was shot on miniDV.

You mentioned “set the Easy Setup setting to Kona NTSC US Betacam 8-bit to DV.” I see that the “Easy Setup” is an option in Final Cut Pro. Will the Easy Setup setting just apply to footage being captured from the Kona card? Or will FCP also apply this setting to footage that is being captured through my minDV deck via firewire?

Also… if I am batch digitizing footage from an EDL that includes video from DV and BetaSP, how will FCP know which deck to capture from if both decks are connected to my Mac? Does it ask you, with each tape that you load, which deck that you want to capture from?

I am asking these questions because I want to have a good sense of what to expect since I will be renting a BetaSP deck and don’t want to waste any time during my weekend rate period 🙂

Thanks again for the informed helped.

  • Thank you, Jerry.

  • I am assuming that since I cannot export the premiere Title files to FCP, I could just delete the track that contains the titles in Premiere, as a step to reducing my total video track number to 2.

Am I correct in deducing that I cannot import the title files from Premiere 6.5 to FCP?

  • Thanks, Jerry.

I actually am going to import the EDL to a new FCP suite that I purchased, so I can do testing myself to make sure that it will go smoothly.

I will go over my timeline in Premiere and try to reduce the video tracks to 2, and audio to 4.

By the way, if I need to batch digitize from 2 different decks (a DV and BataSP via a Kona LHe), can the FCP Batch digitizing command handle that?

Thanks again for your ideas and feedback,

    Khashyar

  • I wonder which of these other EDL formats (which Premiere 6.5 can generate) would import best into FCP 5.1? Do any of these retain more than 2 video and 4 audio tracks?

    Generic EDL
    Grass Valley EDL
    CMX 3400
    CMX 3600
    Sony BVE 5000
    Sony BVE 9000
    Sony BVE 9100

At the moment, I have 5 video tracks (including the track 1 A and B), and 5 audio tracks.

    Thanks for your help,

    Khashyar

  • Thanks for the information, Jerry.

I checked out the http://www.automaticduck.com website, and their software tools seem to specifically work with Premiere “Pro,” and not Premiere 6.5

Perhaps the best solution is to try to reduce my timeline to 2 video and 4 audio tracks.

    I appreciate other suggestions,

    Khashyar
