  • How many video tracks can be imported into FCP via EDL?

Posted by Khashyar Darvich on May 21, 2006 at 10:37 pm

    Hi Everyone,

I am going to be importing an EDL (probably through CMX 3600) from Premiere 6.5 to FCP 5.1, and I was wondering how many video tracks can be recognized by FCP on an EDL.

I was looking at the Final Cut Pro Bible, and although it says that a CMX 3600 EDL has a limit of 4 audio tracks, it does not specify that there is a limit as to how many video tracks can be specified in the EDL.

Also… I do have 4 audio tracks. Each of the audio tracks contains a MIX of the two channels from a particular clip. Is there any way to have FCP assign the mixed audio track that is on the EDL to two seperate tracks? For example, if I have a mixed audio track (a mix of channel 1 and channel 2 of the original clip), is there any way that I can assign all of the channel one audio to tracks 1 and 2 in the FCP sequence? This means that I will probably will need 6 to 8 tracks of audio in FCP, assuming that tracks 1-3 have audio from video. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Khashyar

    P.S…

I ask this import video track question because I have been told that through the CMX 3600 EDL, that I can only import a total of 2 video tracks.

[Khashyar Darvich] “I have been told that through the CMX 3600 EDL, that I can only import a total of 2 video tracks.”

    You have been told correctly.

FCP Manual. Volume One. Chapter 17 “Exporting Edit Decision Lists (EDLs) and Batch Lists”

“A superimposed video track, or any track other than V1, is called a key track in an EDL. Only
one key track can be in an EDL, so information for V1 and V2 tracks only appears in an
    exported EDL. “

You have to export separate EDLs for each additional track.

However if i understand you’re post you are importing an edl into FCp from Premiere. In which case…

When you import an EDl into FCP it just turns it into a sequence, so you can export as many edls you like, individually, from premiere, then bring them into FCP and play around with them in their sequence form.

    for some background….

EDL’s are a very old standard. They were originally used for linear (tape machine) based edit systems like CMX, GVG and Sony. Because there is only one record machine, the idea of multiple video tracks really does not translate into this protocol. The AAF protocol was created to replace EDL’s on non-linear systems..FCP and other systems support it, but the whole thing is in its infancy and doesnt really work well yet.

Use multiple EDL’s for each video track, as others have mentioned.
