I cannot argue with you. It appears you are correct.
You are also correct in points 1, 2 and 3.
Although I suppose one could argue point 2. If you are new to this forum and you click read entire thread, it may not be obvious who you replied to. Especially when someone is reading the responses in hopes that they have stumbled across a forum filled with knowledgeable, helpful, sympathetic users. It appears this was Giles first Cow post.
If you’ve ever read any of my posts, you might notice that I try to be humorous. (emphasis on try) I found your post humorous. Not has funny as my stuff. Kind of a good-effort funny.
What I’ve learned over the years of writing funny posts is that for some odd reason, not everyone finds what I write funny. I try not to argue with their perspective. I accept their point of view and usually apologize.
Sometimes I write a quick, short post that I think is really funny. And then realize (based on my past experiences) that it might not be appropriate and after writing a wonderfully humorous post, I delete it.
It’s a shame you didn’t consider deleting yours.
But, as I’m sure you’ll point out, you are free to express your opinions here on the Cow.
And once again, you’d be right.

Did you try calling Apple? If not, it’s at least worth a try.
Did you try re-installing FCP X? Given the description of what happened, I’m not sure it will help. But it can’t hurt.
In the future (which I realize doesn’t help you now) …
Put both your Events and Project together, but in a place where you can use Time Machine to back them up. Have all your media referenced, don’t copy it to the Events folder.
I highly recommend Duplicating your project as you go. It’s kind of like performing a Save As. Especially if you ever come across a situation where Undo stops working. This was a big issue for people who have lost work. However, I believe this issue should have been completely fixed with release 10.0.1.
As has already been suggested, get a UPS to backup your computer and your external drive. Loosing power in the middle of something is, as you have unfortunately found out sometime unrecoverable.

Perhaps I was unclear in the comment I made about this web site. What I mean is that this is the first discussion group I’ve come across that has a section dedicated to debating a product. While at the same time, there is a separate section to discuss the techniques of the very same product. I haven’t seen any other product with two sections like this on the Cow. (maybe I missed them) I haven’t come across any other sites that have two sections to discuss a product, one for debating, one for techniques. I’m sure there are a lot of sites on the Internet, many of which I haven’t been to. (usenet maybe?) But, as I pointed out and you quoted me, FCP X is the only product I’ve come across that has two sections like the Cow does here. There may be many more similar to this, but not that I’ve come across.

It appears you think you have proved me wrong. While you may have proved me wrong (though about what I’m not sure) I was suggesting you prove wrong the point I was making. My point was, I felt Apple was being misleading promoting FCP X as their best product of 2011.
I think I provided enough facts (from Apple actually) to prove my point that Apple is in fact being misleading on this topic.
Although, as I am an educated user, I was not misled.
Well, maybe I was. I did buy FCP X before I knew what was wrong with it.

If I had a Mac Pro with Thunderbolt, I’m not sure I would use a Thunderbolt product. The few I’ve seen (including the ones that haven’t shipped yet) are Thunderbolt only. No USB, Firewire or eSATA. How much and what kind of data do you want to put on a large storage device that has only one interface with a rather limited installed base?

Apple decided to create a best of the year list of apps.
The only criteria they used, was their opinion. (at least according to what they posted)
If they used other, less subjective criteria, I probably wouldn’t have posted anything about it. (but I wouldn’t bet on that) However, I’m not sure FCP X would have come out on top as Apple’s best App for 2011.
It’s not number one (for just Apple) as top paid. Lion, Pages, iPhoto, FaceTime, Keynote, iMovie, Aperture, GarageBand, Logic Pro are all ahead of Final Cut Pro. (note, Apple leaves out the X in FCP)

Hey, I got an idea. How about raking Apple’s Apps by what the users think? Let’s take a look at the 5 star (highest) user rating and compare it to 1 star (lowest) user rating. Following is the 5 and 1 star ratings for Apple’s Top Paid Apps on the App Store, as of today. The list is in the order, as they appear on the App Store. Highest Top Paid to lowest Top Paid. (disclaimer: I omitted the 4, 3 and 2 star ratings for two reasons. One, you either love it or hate it. 4, 3 and 2 star ratings are simply from people who are too indecisive. Plus, this post is taking too much time to write)

752 One Star (what? how can that be?)Well, that didn’t work either. It looks like iPhoto and FCP X are battling it out for the highest percentage of unhappy users compared to happy ones. And for some reason, the fact that the iMovie users seem happy really bothers me.
FCP X users are so unhappy that it appears (at least to me) that FCP X is the only software that I’ve come across that has a dedicated forum for “discussing” it. This very forum. Not a forum to post questions or issues people need help with. There’s another forum for that. This forum is for FCP X users who simply like to talk about it. Even if talking about it makes them unhappy.
Now, to make sure you understand me. I do not have an issue with Apple promoting it’s products. They are in the business of selling stuff.
I just found this particular promotion of this particular product a little misleading. Since it appears they needed a rather subjective criteria in order for FCP X to come out on top.
But, I could be wrong. If I am, I’m sure you will set me straight. Or at least try. You are going to try, aren’t you?

Look at what Apple considers to be the key differences between iPhoto and Aperture (why you should upgrade to Aperture).

These differences don’t seem all that far apart. I don’t think it would be too hard to expand iPhoto’s capabilities to that of Aperture.
The cost difference (now) is $14.99 and $79.99.
If Apple could justify killing off FCS and bringing out FCP X, what’s the reason for them not merging iPhoto and Aperture?
Do they want to grow Aperture to have features more like Photoshop? I doubt that.
Are they concerned about how their Aperture users would feel if they merged the two? I doubt that too.
Besides, how does the size of the Aperture user base compare to Lightroom? Probably not the same as FCP 7 vs PP. At least in terms of users making a living using either one.
Either way, I found it interesting, when I came across the Aperture article that photo users have watched what Apple has done on the video side of their business and simply see it as writing on the wall for Aperture. Although, Aperture users probably won’t loose out in the same way FCS users did.

For the record, I think I’m a very funny guy, even though the list of those who would agree might be very short. (only one perhaps?) So, keep that in mind when reading my posts. (or avoiding them altogether as some probably do, no offense taken, no offense intended)
Jim Giberti is right, much of this has been discussed on this forum. Many of the discussions have been rather passionate as well.
I’d summarize all of those discussions as follows …
Some have tried FCP X and are using it.
Some have tried FCP X and found it works much better in certain ways for their workflow where FCP 7 did not.
Some have tried FCP X and found it useful after some new features were added.
Some have tried FCP X and find it completely unusable.
Some have tried FCP X and not only find it so completely unusable that it pains them to even discuss it. (yet, they punish themselves by continuing to discuss it)
Some have tried FCP X and decided to move away from Final Cut and Apple altogether.The rest are watching and waiting.
If you are still reading this post, I was wondering if you could provide some more details on your particular project. You have a fairly fast system for running FCP X. Although I’m not sure about where your media is kept. It would be interesting to know more about what you are doing and why you have performance issues. Some things that can slow FCP X down:
FCP X seems to like more than 7 GB of RAM for itself. Plus, if you are running Lion, there seems to be a memory issue where Inactive Memory can quickly consume your free memory. This will slow down FCP X. There are free utilities to free up your memory. (hey, a pun?) Or run the purge command in Terminal.
Are you using any stills? FCP X seems to have performance issues with stills, depending on their size and number. There was another thread that talked about this. Using PNG instead of JPG, less compression.
As as been suggested, if your system can handle your project without rendering, turn it off. I do. Also, it appears that when you export, FCP X seems to utilize your GPU to render things much more quickly.
If you’re still reading this thread, I’m impressed. Even I’m getting bored and I think I’m pretty interesting.

Thanks for reminding me. I had gotten his first FCP X book and forgot to check back on his second one. Which I just purchased.
It’s rare (at least in my opinion and opinions here are okay) when you come across a well written book, such as his. It does a great job explaining how FCP X works. Since FCP X works so differently, it’s really a good reference.
