I thought, and I could be completely wrong, but I thought around NAB time there was a mock up or an interview with someone at Panasonic that talked about a P2 Varicam…
I’m not sure why a new compression scheme would be needed… A Varicam sized camera would have more than two slots and would therefore be able to record longer takes…

Barry (or Jan), a quick question for you…
Why is the HVX capable (at least in P2) of recording the necessary discreet frames at lower frame rates in 720p, yet in the 1080p modes records inside the 1080 60i stream? Was there some technical reason for this?

Has anyone had any experience with any of their models? How do they compare to the Firestore, etc?

I guess I should have mentioned that everything is metering right where I want it. It’s just that it’s output is lower than everything else. I have most of my audio “zeroing out” right at -12db, but it’s only a reasonal volume when it’s right at 0db and just starting to peak.

That is exactly what I was referring to earlier, I definately remember this being said. Not to beat a dead horse, but I remember people saying to that the panny engineers were working on this capability… What post did Jan shoot this down in?

It seems to me that it would be a fairly easy thing to do to make a plate of some sort, that attaches where the tripod plate does (actually a plate with a hole in it so the tripod plate would still attach), and then comes up behind the camera to mount the firestore on… I have a very simily plate mounted on my XL1s for the attachment of wireless mic receivers… (which with the introduction of decent solid state audio recorders will be migrating very soon to another person entirely…)

I seem to remember in the announced specs that the firewire would handle both types of streams (ie: data transfer and just streaming out the video). So has all hope been abandoned of just using an off-the-shelf firewire drive? To my knowledge, it was never fully ruled out by Panasonic… Did I miss something?

Hey Chris,
I think you’re confusion comes from the fact that DVCPRO HD is 100 mbs, which is 100 mega BITS per second… 8 bits to a byte and you’re looking at only 12.5 mega BYTES per second (MBs), which is well within the range of very nearly all HDD’s on the market these days. And that’s only for the full rez/frame rate of 720p/60 or 1080i/60.
Also, as for the tape drive, Jan (from Panasonic) and many others have commented both here and at DVINFO.net, that the tape materials and heads required to read/record DVCPRO 50 and HD are both too expensive and too large to write to Mini DV tape in a cam this size. In fact, I think I’ve seen it that the 16 pairs of heads required to write DVCPRO HD to tape are around $6K cost for Panasonic…

Yeah, here’s the link. She never mentions that the card couldn’t be recognized, and she does elaborate a little further on, saying that the drive just couldn’t keep up…
Here’s an excerpt from Jan’s second post on the topic:
“So to answer your Question I think it was a 40Mb drive and we tried with with 25 and 50. I think it was a Toshiba. But I think that the little drive didn’t understand what it was supposed to do and since it was not designed to write video and a sustained rate, we blew its little mind. That is not to say that once that industry sees that there is another market they might figure out how to make it work. The thing is once we move away from tape drives and turn it into an IT question, change seems to happen at a much faster rate.”
