once i had experience similar to yours, random frames showing up in a render… i think it was ae5.5 or 6.5 on a mdd g4. it was like random frames were getting stuck in ram and showing up in a project’s render that wasn’t even using those frames.
i was able to edit>purge>all to fix. but i’ve never had that problem since.

i would check with the manufacturer for latest driver info, know issues and work arounds. you could also try trashing the qt prefs, maybe even ae prefs and rendering out to different codecs.

it is mostlikely that the ‘quality’ check box is set to draft… in your timeline, to the right of the layer source name, there should be a series of icons, the ‘layer switches’ (you may need to turn these on by clicking the little box and the bottom-left corner of the timeline). the diagonal line icon is the quality setting, it should look like a smooth line. if it doesn’t, click it.
if that doesn’t work, make sure that opengl previews are not on (set it to adaptive resolution). you can do this the the previews pref pane, or by clicking the fast previews icon on the bottom-right of the preview window, and seeting it to adaptive resolution. if you video card is not opengl 2.0, antialias is not an option if you are using opengl to render previews or final render, so also make sure that your render settings are not set to use opengl acceleration.
that’s all i can think of, let us know if you continue to have problems.

i’ll check that out when i get a chance… but i will say that other opengl accelerated features, like motion blur and blending modes, preview fine with opengl enabled. it’s jsut when i use an effect that is opengl accelerated, like fast blur, gausian blur, levels, curves, etc…
but put those on an adjustment layer and they fine.
just seems strange…

it’s a few years old, but will probably still work. you can find it here, if you haven’t already.

he also has sinedots II
the movement of the lines reminds me of that old windows screens save… curves… or mystify… i think

generally you don’t want to ‘export,’ you want to ‘render.’ select the compositon menu and then eiether ‘add to render queue’ or ‘make movie.’ this should bring up the render queue. you can select from some output module options or just click ‘lossless,’ set channels to rgb+. now you will get a render with alpha.
you should really check out aharon’s tutorial, he does a good job of explaining some of the details of these settings, but usually you will also want to set color to straight.

check out particleillusion, zaxwerks invigorator/proanimator, knoll lens flare pro (red giant) to name a few.

i’ve been testing out opengl problems and work arounds with ae7 on a macpro today (i was actually searching around to see what other people have been doing about opengl when i stumbled in here). but based on what i’ve found, g marshall can probably fix the fast blur crashes (and any other crashes related to opengl accelerated effects) by either switching to previews adaptive resolution (ae software rendering) or (and i’m still testing this) put the fast blur (or other opengl hardware accelerated effect) on an adjustment layer.
it seems a shame not to be able to use a kick-ass gfx card in ae. so if this adjustment layer trick holds up it may be a matter of creatively structuring your comp and nested comps to utilize hardware acceleration (at least on a macpro)

help menu; type ‘stabilize’… it will describe how to use motion tracking to stabilize your footage
