  • Creating Alpha Layer?

Posted by Quiettristan on March 1, 2007 at 6:44 pm

    Hello all ,

So iam working on this digital frog in After effects iam cutting it out of a video to insert ontop of another video as a layer in Avid . I have cut it out using the pen tool and now its time for export.

Now everytime i export it , when i pull it up in quicktime there is a grey backround which i need to be removed.

Is there anyway to create an alpha channel so that all i have is just a green frog and no backround.

    Thankyou
    Tristan

this is a good tutorial here at creative cow by aharon robinowitz you should take a look at:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=2&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/straight_vs_premult/index.html

but a quick answer to your question, you need to render to a codec/format that can contain alpha chanel data (like lossless animtion, tiff seq., etc) and you need to set the render to render an alpha chanel in the render settings (check the help menu).

however, in qt, you will not be able to see your alpha chanel, you will need to take it into ae or your avid (at import into avid you need to seleect invert alpha to reverse the key).

Did you check your export settings? You have to choose “RGB+Alfa” and “Millions of colors +” then when you import it to Avid , in the import preferences , You should choose “invert existing..

When i go to export it just allows me to select what video type but in the settings of that there is no RGB tab to select. Am i looking in the wrong area ?

cause when iam working in my timeline on the Comp i just go >File>Export> and there is no RGB setting there…

    Thanks

generally you don’t want to ‘export,’ you want to ‘render.’ select the compositon menu and then eiether ‘add to render queue’ or ‘make movie.’ this should bring up the render queue. you can select from some output module options or just click ‘lossless,’ set channels to rgb+. now you will get a render with alpha.

you should really check out aharon’s tutorial, he does a good job of explaining some of the details of these settings, but usually you will also want to set color to straight.
