so you have 30i that you want to make 24p…? set ae to interpret footage correctly (select the footage in the project window, then choose file>interpret footage>main, set the separate fileds to lower (dv ntsc) leave framerate alone). that will remove the interlacing giving you 30p. now you can drop that into a 23.976 comp.
you only need to deal with pulldown when you go back to 29.97, or if you had 24p footage that had already had a pulldown added to take it to 29.97 and you wanted to go back to 24p. then in the interpret footage, choose separate fields (lower) and guess pulldown. then place that into 23.976 comp.

i have the same osx (10.4.9) and qt (7.1.6) on a macpro and i have no issues with the text effects (basic or timecode) so i don’t think the issue is with qt or the os itself.
there may be a problem with some codecs and the new qt, and i would start there… remove third party qt components from the library/quicktime and user/(name)/library/quicktime… leave the system/library alone.

i think i would do the stroke approach on a separate layer and parent that lyaer to the map layer to maintain the scale and position relationship. if you wanted the line weight to scale with the map, you could add an expression for brush size to link it the scale of the map, like:
effect(“Stroke”)(5) * (thisComp.layer(“MapLayer”).transform.scale[0] / 100)
if you had a drop shadow, you would probably want a similar expression for shadow distance and softness…

in the switches column of the timeline, there is a column that looks like a pixelated diagonal line icon (a quality setting). make sure that for your text layer, the setting looks like a smooth line in the opposite direction (best quality setting). if not, just click it and it will cycle throught the settings.
if that’s not the porblem, make sure opengl is off. at the bottom of the preview window on the right side there is a lightning bolt icon click that and set to adaptive resolution. you can also disable opengl all together in the preview pref, which is usually not a bad idea (i don’t think that there is a mac agp graphics card that can utilize all the opengl functions of ae, like anti-alias and motion blur)

June 18, 2007 at 3:28 pm in reply to: Choosing the Pan HVX200? Dynamics? Color rendition?for the first part of question number one… i think that the your down converted hd footage will look better than your sd footage, particularly if you have been shooting in dv25. you’ll have a lot more color information, and you scaled down footage will have a less harsh look that is a little more film-like.
for the second part of the question, there is a lot more to looking like film than just the frame rate, so you will still use a similar process for your progressive hd footage.
as far as 25p…? i think so, but i’m not sure. panasonic should cover that on their site. there is also a panasonic p2 cam forum here that could probably help you.

June 18, 2007 at 3:14 pm in reply to: AE uses more ram during renders in osx then in windows on my MBPyou could double check the memory and cache pref in ae and make sure they are the same. also the secret pref, to make sure the purge frame settings are the same.
but i have a feeling it is the powerpc version of ae7 that using more ram on the mac side.

June 18, 2007 at 2:23 pm in reply to: AE uses more ram during renders in osx then in windows on my MBPi am assuming that ae only uses the ram it needs to render a given comp and its effects. so i don’t think you need to be concerned about ram usage in windows. the mac version may be using more ram due to being non-mactel friendly, but it is an interesting find.
have you downloaded the cs3 version yet? i’d be curious how the ram usage compares between windows and osx using a version that was written for both.

you also may want to place a post in adobe labs’ cs3 forum, requesting native support within ae for mxf files… i was requested to do so (and did) a few weeks ago.
p2 files are goin to get more and more common, and it seems that ae should have the capability to at least read them… i’ve always been able to get over not being able to capture with ae, but once you have digital footage as a file, it seems like ae should read them, rather than having to get third party tools to get acces the files.
it sounds like this is gaining support, so its worth letting adobe know how many users would benefit from it.

i believe your dual g5 has an agp graphics card slot, so i think the best graphics card you can get is the ati x800xt. but it won’t give you opengl 2.0 which you would need to get full opengl support in ae (which i believe include motion blur and anti-aliasing). you might double check me on the cards, but last i checked there were no opengl 2.0 cards for agp macs.
that being said, i don’t think that a graphics card will help speed things up much for you. timewarp is a processor intensive effect. spending about $150 on nucleo pro (checkout gridironsoftware.com) would probably be a bigger benefit.
and max the ram out, esspecially if you get nucleo pro.
hd…? you can work in hd with your setup. are you asking about capturing hd, or monitoring in hd?
