    hi there,

I’m working on a macbook pro 2 gigs of ram, 256 vid card, and i run after effects 7 on both the mac and windows side.

When rendering in osx, AE uses 50% of my ram when rendering, when i render something inthe windows side (same machine) it only tends to use 12%, any ideas why? and how i can make AE use more ram in windows?

    thanks!

i am assuming that ae only uses the ram it needs to render a given comp and its effects. so i don’t think you need to be concerned about ram usage in windows. the mac version may be using more ram due to being non-mactel friendly, but it is an interesting find.

have you downloaded the cs3 version yet? i’d be curious how the ram usage compares between windows and osx using a version that was written for both.

haven’t tried CS3 yet, in the middle of a project right now, but will after.

I wonder if the answer lies in some settings? or perhaps it is as simple as you suggested.

you could double check the memory and cache pref in ae and make sure they are the same. also the secret pref, to make sure the purge frame settings are the same.

but i have a feeling it is the powerpc version of ae7 that using more ram on the mac side.

I have found that myself. It is the fact that AE 7 is created for PPC and Windows not for MacIntel. I also tested this with CS 2 and CS 3. BIG DIFFERENCE ON RAM HOGGING. So, wait till the New AE comes out (I believe in July’s END). Then compare the Mac vs PC. I at the moment went back to my PPC to work on AE.
    Not to get off subject:
But, Have you experienced AE crashing on your MacBook Pro? I have and I have had to install it again.

i have had a few crashes on the mbp both on the osx, and windows side, i think they where caused by plug-ins tough. Illustrator does tend to crash more so i find.
