PULLDOWN Pattern? WWSSWW?
Posted by Michael Zoppo on June 18, 2007 at 7:27 pmIm testing out a 24p converter, and Im still getting some interlaced lines when the camera moves and it looks pretty ugly why are the lines there, and what type of pulldown should I be using for regular DV footage?

June 18, 2007 at 7:33 pmVideo cameras shoot 24p, but record with pulldown to bring it to 60i.
I don’t know what a 24p converter does, sorry.Did you try “guessing” the pulldown in the AE interpret footage dialog?
Alternately, did you try one of the advanced pulldown settings?

June 18, 2007 at 7:41 pmso you have 30i that you want to make 24p…? set ae to interpret footage correctly (select the footage in the project window, then choose file>interpret footage>main, set the separate fileds to lower (dv ntsc) leave framerate alone). that will remove the interlacing giving you 30p. now you can drop that into a 23.976 comp.
you only need to deal with pulldown when you go back to 29.97, or if you had 24p footage that had already had a pulldown added to take it to 29.97 and you wanted to go back to 24p. then in the interpret footage, choose separate fields (lower) and guess pulldown. then place that into 23.976 comp.

June 18, 2007 at 7:41 pmYeah — what Steve says…
What’s the pattern on the original footage? (don’t know what W and S are…)
P=progressive I=interlaced
PPPIIPPPII – 24p (from a dvx)
PPPPIPPPPI – 24pAEach need different settings to remove any pulldown.
Haven’t gotten into any of that in AE… I use FCP and Cinema Tools to remove any cadence I might have on footage.

June 18, 2007 at 7:45 pmA 3:2 pulldown is used to go from 24fps footage to interlaced NTSC 29.97fps footage. It sounds like you’re trying to go from 29.97 to 23.976? If your footage was originally shot at 24 frames per second then a pulldown was added and you can use the remove 3:2 pulldown feature in AE (or even better, get the original footage!).
Otherwise, if your footage was shot at 29.97fps you should probably look at Andrew Kramer’s Frame Rate Conversion tutorial:
Basically he drops 29.97fps footage into a 23.976fps comp and uses Timewarp to speed the footage up enough to playback at the proper frame rate in a 23.976 comp, he includes a handy animation preset that does this math for you.
As for interlacing, AE has a built-in method for removing interlacing in the Interpret Footage dialog (since you don’t want to apply effects or composite with interlaced footage). You just need to know which field in your footage is rendered first (usually lower for NTSC).

W = whole frame
S = split frameWhole frames are frames in which the fields contain the original fields of the 24fps footage, split contain one field from the previous frame and one from the next.
