[tayres] “But it let me paste onto a layer that is a composition”
that seems even more strange…
if you want to troubleshoot this, open ae and illustrator. then create a new illustrator file (make the artboard 640×480) and create a simple shape in a new illustrator file, like a square. copy the shape, then go to ae, make a new comp, make a new solid (comp size) and paste. if paste is greyed out, try the keyboard shortcut.

i think the only way you could get the apple hdv codec is to purchase fcp, and i don’t think purchasing quicktime pro would give it to you.
i honestly don’t know why apple keeps a strangle hold on their pro codecs, it’s really anoying. i have the hdv codec on a g5, it came with motion back when you could purchase motion separately. but, it’s not a universal binary, so it won’t work on my macpro (unless i run ae or quicktime under rosetta).
ok, gripe over…
i think the client would provide the codec if they really wanted a version in hdv, and you explained that you can’t purchase it without buying fcp. the location of the file is drivename/library/quicktime. it’s called applehdvcodec.component.
if anyone knows how to get universal binary versions of apple’s hd quicktime components, i would love to know how (other than buying fcp)…

i can relate to dealing with corporate workflows… they like to have one procedure for every one, even if many of the units could do it faster, easier and, often, better with a differrent workflow.

[Tim Vaughan] “under your Quicktime options, you do have the ability to render out exactly to the spec you are working, say HDV 1080p24”
you might double check that… i don’t have hdv as a render option in quicktime. if you are on a mac, the client should be able to provide it, since they are using it in fcp… for windows you can probably download it in one of the codec packs that have been mentioned at the cow, search hdv codec download, etc.
the slight negative of this workflow (providing two different sizes) is that you will have to render twice… you can’t just add an output module to the render and have it kick out two files for one render. the fastest workflow i can think of would be to render the lossess version, with a post render setting of import, then drop the lossless render into an hdv1080 preset with 23.976 fps and then render that.

[Nico Jones] “if you try and run any plugin that’s not universal binary in AECS3 then it will force the whole shebang to run under rosetta”
not exactly, cs3 will run as intel native, you just won’t have access to any powerpc effects, unless you force cs3 to run under rosetta (from the get info window). then you get the ppc effects and all ub effects. if you had to run cs3 under rosetta, i would think the same method of restricting ram usage in ae that was applied to ae7 would help performance… but it’s definitely not the prefered way to run cs3 on an intel mac.
i think serg is on a g5 anyway, so he won’t have any of those problems. but like steve said, checking with the effect maker for updates is the best way to go.

i rememeber coming across this issue several years ago… i think the issue was that quicktime dv contains a low-res/quality preview, but that can be overriden in qt pro (as steve mentioned). things looked bad in qt but were fine (well.. as fine a graphics look in dv25) once we played them out of the air device that needed dv.
joseph, i don’t know about rendering to quicktime dv, then exporting that to dv stream. it seems that you may be compressing dv twice… you can export a dv stream straight from ae from file>export>dv stream, and should get the same export options there as you do in quicktime pro. its the method we used to get dv into this deko we have. that way you would bypass any further potential loss and save a little time too.

well, it sounds like you are set up right…. are you only selecting vector data when you choose copy? if you are selecting raster data too, it may be causing problems….

yep, it reported and error with adobe after effects 8~2.0 mc pref.
disk utility stated:
(should be 1 instead of 0)
incorrect number of thread records
volume bit map needs minor repair.i was able to repair with disk utility from the macpro install disk. i rebooted, opened ae cs3, and then ran disk utility again to see if ae created a new ‘bad’ pref, but the disk checked out ok… this time anyway.

if you haven’t already, you should post this in adobe’s ae forum.
i’ve been using cs3 on a macpro for a month now, and i haven’t had any major problems… but i haven’t been cloning the hard drive either….

it sounds like a limit of 1500 encodes, and that may be only if you are driving the software thru an automated process… this was from their site: https://www.sorensonmedia.com/pages/?pageID=124.
